I have done some research which suggests that his father was John Graham 4th Earl of Montrose,  Graham-918. (Project Protected) Could someone confirm or refute this please.

One of the best sources for a quick, and usually highly reliable, check of a noble lineage is Sir James Balfour Paul's Scots Peerage

In this instance he doesn't have any mention of a son William. See: 4th Earl of Montrose: vi 238-242

It also shows that the title Earl of Airth was newly created in 1633 by patent of King Charles, so too late to apply to your William Graham who deceased in 1623. See: Earl of Airth: i 133-145

I won't try to resolve the parentage of your William, but you may find more about him elsewhere in this resource. As a finding aid, there is a Wikipedia page to help, giving quick & easy links to all the volumes and index.

Hope this helps some!

Thank you for your answer, I have amended his Biography in the meantime. (He is shown in a family tree as John 4th Earl of Montrose) but of course needs other confirmation.  I will keep working on it.

Further note , I found an interesting read on Genealogy.com/forom/surnames  Grahams in Scotland - my line from 1590 by David Stacey.  The first paragraph identifies my William Graham, but it becomes rather convoluted.  But it does shed some light on my father's middle name Maxwell.  The family never understood where it came from, but on reading this entry I saw that through the years there were a few Grahams with the middle name of Maxwell. I am a little further forward,  not much, but a little. Thanks for your suggestions
