Joseph Louis Tenbroeck / Ten Broeck / Ten Broock was born in the 1840's (possibly on March14) and was married to Margaret Cocoran.  They were the parents of George Alfred TenBroeck who was born on Aug 2, 1875 and died Aug 8, 1942.  If anyone has any information on this would very much appreciate it!  Thanking you in advance.

Hi Debi,

Is there a Wikitree profile with more information (particularly approximate places), sources, and family that you know of? These types of details can help others to help you.

Hi Ron ... I know that George Alfred TenBroeck was born in Merritton, Lincoln, Ontario, Canada.  My mom thinks his dad Joseph Louis TenBroeck was the son of Peter Wessel TenBroeck b 1802/03 and died June 12, 1873 who was married to a Helen (this is questionable) .. She  traces this all back to the beginning - Wessel TenBroeck - married to Catharine Loockermans b. Aug 1669 ....

In browsing around I came across a number of records for children that are almost certainly children of Joseph TenBroeck and Margaret Corcoran. One of these was a Mary Helen Tenbroeck born about 1871 who married a Richard McGarr in 1897.

I mention Mary Helen specifically because she gives me more confidence that family 91 of Grantham Twp., Lincoln, in this 1871 Census record [link] for Lewis Tinbrook with wife Margaret and children Charles W. and Mary H (born Jan 1871) is probably the correct family that George Alfred (later) belongs to. The reported age of 25 would give Joseph (Lewis) a birth of ~1846.

This age would fit perfectly with the child of Peter and Hellen Ten(beck?) found in Grantham in 1861 who definitely sports the middle initial L. and whose first initial could be read as J. [link]

This Peter is an Innkeper, 58 years old (note census gives age at next birthday) so born about 1802. His wife Hellen is 45 and born about 1816.

I have some other material that I want to look at before I continue this answer but I'll come back to it later today.

Continuing...

There are land records summarized here [link] of Peter W Tenbroeck purchasing land at Grantham in 1839 from Thomas Butler and John R Tenbroeck (not clear from the linked page if that is Thomas BUTLER or Thomas Butler TENBROECK, the name of a son of Jacob Tenbroeck and Priscilla Read and a brother to John Read Tenbroeck)

This land was at Con 3 lots 22-23 and at Con 4 lot 23 of Grantham. In the following year Peter sells parts of these lots to John Vanderburgh.

In 1864 Helen Tenbrook purchased the Welland Valley Hotel at Con 9, part lots 11 and 12 from Margaret Vanderburgh. She is found in the 1869 Province of Ontario Gazeteer and Directory at Merritton under the name H. Lenbrock

Unfortunately the 1851 Census enumeration of Grantham Twp. is missing, but the names Peter W. and Hellen Tenbroeck are found on footstones of infant children buried in Homer Burying Ground with dates in the 1840-1850 period so it would appear they did not move away between selling parts of their property and purchasing the hotel.

Peter and Hellen are also found in Census 1871 [link].

A marriage record from Lewiston, NY for Peter W. (Ten Broeck) and Helen Alquire, both of St. Catharines, Upper Canada dated 15 Oct 1839 is transcribed here [link]

An 1838 list of petit-jurors transcribed here [link] does contain the name Peter Wessel TenBroeck of Grantham, so it certainly seems possible, if not likely, to be the same Peter W that married Hellen a year later.

I think, all things considered that Peter W is also likely the baptism of January 1803 ttranscribed here [link] as Peter Wepill Ten Broeck son of Jacob and Priscilla. A marriage record a few years earlier (1797) gives Priscilla's maiden name as Read. [link]

Ron Ton I have sent you an email which I hope you have recieved  I really appreciate all this and have also hopefully got some dates that would help with this process or with others who need information.

continuing again...

Jacob who married Priscilla was the son of Loyalist Captain Peter Ten Broeck (of Butler's Rangers) and Anna Herkimer, and was himself a Major in the 4th Lincoln Militia.

You might also be interested in seeing the entry for Petrus ten Broeck on page 13 of this document by Mary Lou Cook. While I have not scrutinized the document it appears, at a quick glance, to at least give sources and ultimately links the Loyalist Peter Ten Broeck lineage back two generations further than Wessel and wife Cattryna Loockermans.

I have not seen anything to refute the ancestry your mom gives and a fair amount of evidence that, while not definitive, taken as a whole tends to support her version. To recap, the hypothesized paternal line incorporating the various sources given in this and previous responses:

1. George Alfred; b. 1875 (date  26 Oct); m. 1895, Florence May MALIN

2. Joseph Louis (or Lewis);b. abt 1846; m. prob. abt 1870, Margaret CORCORAN (or Cochrane)

3. Peter Wepill (or more likely Wessel); b. 1802; m. 1839 Hellen ALQUIRE

**Wikitree profiles already exist for the following starting with Tenbroeck-77**

4. Jacob; m. 1797, Priscilla READ

5. Petrus (or Peter); b. abt 1735; m. 1758, Annatje "Anna" HERKIMER (or Herchheimer)

6. Jacob b.1700; m1. 1725, Christina van ALEN

7. Wessel; b. 1664; m. 1684, Cattryna LOOCKERMANS

8. Dirk Wesselse; b. 1638; m. 1663, Christina van BUREN

9. Wessel Wesselse

Debi, I have not recieved your e-mail (even checked my spam folder just in case)

If you have more dates might I suggest adding them directly to the profiles they are relevant to, or if needed creating a free-space page and adding the information there.

All the best,
