1851 Scotland Census says William was apprentice Brewer. Tips to find more records

William's address is 1851 Census is 14 Temple Lane, Dundee Scotland.  He lived with parents and siblings. His father was Alexander Porter - age 48. Mother: Mary Porter age 49 years.  

He arrived in Australia (Brisbane) March 1879.

There's already plenty of information on familysearch which I haven't independently verified but looks OK. FindMyPast also has his mother as Mary Kerr.

Scotlands People is the website with most genealogical records on, run by the government and of course pay.

Scotland's People is pretty good for information before the Statutory registers came into play.  It's still good for basic information afterwards.

All you need is to be a registered user, which is free.  

The costs involved come if you want to buy the record (handily given in pdf format, immediately downloadable).

SOME of what SP offers can also be found on FamilySearch, or ancestry (including using library edition).   Unfortunately, some of those are just transcriptions, not actual images of the documents.
