As a direct descendant of Richard Lane, via his son Maj. Samuel Lane, I have been researching his story. 1st-I am convinced that the Providence Island mentioned in all the stories should be clarified as being "Old" Providence Island as in Isle d'Providencia, located off the coast of Columbia, NE of Cartagena rather than "New Providence" in the Bahama's. "Old Providence corresponds to the mentions in company accounts of "Darien" as in the Bay of Darien, near that area. And is also closer to the island of "Association" now known as Haiti.
2nd-I have read where when Richard and the 3 other members of the colony which had been improperly accused and sent to England and were returned exonerated that they could see the Spanish had taken over the island in 1641. I now assume they went on to another colony in the Caribbean held by the British. However what happened to his wife and children? I have also read that in those times women and children captives where sent back to England and any men were sent to Cadiz (as prisoners to be later ransomed/paroled?).
We do know that his wife and daughter died in England later. I have read suppositions that his son Samuel returned to England for education before returning to Maryland to settle. And we do know that he and his son Oziel drowned off the coast of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. I have wondered if Bermuda played any part in the story since the "Eleutheran Adventurers'" left from Bermuda due to their Puritan beliefs, which was one reason that Richard set off for the West Indies. Has anyone found any additional information to add to his story that would explain is or his families whereabouts between 1641 and 1657? Thank you in advance, Dale Lane
