New member introducing myself - Ash G.

Hi everyone! I'm fairly new to this site but have been researching for over 15 years. I believe thus far my tree remains unconnected but I'm hoping to fill in some gaps as I learn more. I have a few brick walls that have remained over the years. I'm researching a branch that ties back to Key West, FL and further back to Cuba before 1900 that has been particularly challenging. Those surnames include Betancourt, Garcia and Rey. I'm looking forward to discovering more with this group. Thanks!

Hi Ash,

My father's family have been in Key West since 1820's. Betancourt is one of our family names, so is Parra (from Louisiana).

Amelia Emelia Betancourt  b 27 Sep 1840 - Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canarias (Canary Islands), Spain d Key West, Fl married to Jose Manuel Cabrera b 1836 Canary Islands Spain d 1890 Key West, Fl married to Jose Manuel Cabrera they had 4 children.

Amparo Delgado Betancourt 28 Oct 1891 Key West, Fl husband Blas Betancourt (1884-1942) they had 4 children

Petrona Betancourt b abt. 1875 married to Jose M Cuervo I have only 1 child listed Felix Cuervo.

I will try and fill in this part of my tree here online. Hope we can find more matches.

Hi Dawne,

Thank you for your response. I would appreciate any help you can offer. I can't recall whom it was but another distant cousin said the same thing about Parras traveling to Louisiana. My Parra branch ties back to Grave de Peralta, hailing from the Holguin, Cuba area, as far as I know. From what I can tell, the Parra line I'm researching was in Ybor City, FL for a number of years.

I tried looking at unindexed church records from Key West, FL on FamilySearch.org trying to find any connections to my Betancourt but no luck thus far. Right now my knowledge about this line is very limited so I'm hoping to discover more.

I look forward to collaborating.
