The National Park Service has the soldiers-and-sailors-database that is free all the time.

Between the two of them, I should be able to find what I'm looking for,

Good luck with your search.  Be sure to check the Civil War Stories section - it is in Beta and has additional info.  Also, the regiment and company info - I found my 2 x great-grandfather was a 2nd Lt. in his.
