I need to count the number f open profiles for surname Maguire.

Question

I have searched for information (answers in G2G) on using the search/navigae feature, and have not found any helpful instructions on searching for stats on a surname. I have seen the example on how to search for stats on a category, but can't figure out how to get that to work on a surname. Is there an instruction page for this WikiTree+ search function? I need to count the total number of open profiles, connected open  profiles, sourced open profiles, etc.

There are 1,793 individuals with the Maguire surname listed at WikiTree. The McGuire spelling has 6,922. You can click on Find at the top right of the WikiTree page to open the Find Menu. Then, click on Surnames, enter the Maguire surname and look at the list.

Maguire with variant spellings is the 2,719th most popular surnames of the close to 50,000 that Surnamedb.com has histories on. The first recorded spelling of the surname was dated 956.

I was able to find that list, and the list with the COUNT of unconnected, open Maguire profiles. But when I click on the UNSOURCED option, I get a list of ALL the unsourced profiles, starting with Maguire, but not limited to Maguire. I would really just like the list of ONLY unsourced Maguires (yes, just that spelling).

The only method I know of doing this is as follows and has one major problem: the search does not differentiate between surname and forename(s) and so would require some manual work (unless their is a way to limit results to surname only on WikiTree+)

1) Find out the total number of profiles with a surname of your choosing (e.g. 1793 for Maguire)

1B) You can do this by clicking Find<Search<Last Name "Maguire" from the top right of your screen

2) Open WikiTree+ and click on the the 'Search' menu then the 'Text Search' menu

3) Under the heading 'Text' put in your search parameters e.g.

Maguire - searches for those with the name Maguire

Connected - searches for connected profiles

Open - searches for open profiles (including those with Project Protection)

20cen - searches only for profiles with dates in the twentieth century

Of course, those values are just examples which can be substituted or left out as needed

4) Under the heading 'Max Profiles' take the total number of profiles with your desired surname and round upwards to the nearest 500 (e.g. Rounding 1793 to 2000 for Maguire)

5) Click the 'Get Profiles' button

To restrict the search to only those profiles with surname Maguire, in step 3 instead of just entering Maguire in the Text box you can enter LastNameatBirth=Maguire.

The Spreadsheet Method of Counting + A Listing

1. goto the Maguire surname list

2. click on unsourced

3. highlight just the Maguire profiles and then copy

4. open your spreadsheet program, open a new document, place cursor in top left cell, then paste, then select cell column and extend width of cell so lines don't wrap within cell, delete column "letter" heading entries, then when bottom of spreadsheet is reached, view count
