2021 Kiwi Crew Connect-a-thon Chat Page

Question

This will be the Kiwi Crew Chat Page for the 2021 Connect-a-thon.

I am starting this early so that we have a place to chat, ask questions, and get to know our team members, etc.

I will add in the hangout times when I get them - after they have been changed to NZT.

The "hangouts" link below seems to go to Youtube and Facebook live videos - is that what you mean?  As opposed to say Google Hangouts or other chat systems; there's no specific chat for Kiwi Crew?

I cannot access Google groups or any discord.

My PC is way too old for that.

That is what this chat page is for.

And i would not want to be chatting live while I am trying to source - that would be way too distracting.

I have enough trouble just trying to stay away from the Olympics right now!!!  LOL

OK the connect-a-thon participation badges have now been given out. Let me know if you dont have one yet.  It's a brown badge with Connect-a-thon 2021 on it.

So far we have 10 team members so that's good.

Start looking at the unconnected profiles on your watch list (suggestions list?) and think about where you want to look for sources and or more family members to get them connected.

And if you find any other profiles that are unconnected, make a note of them so you can go back and work on them during this thon challenge.

If you find any unconnected orphan profiles, then you might want to adopt them first, try and connect them and then you can orphan them again after they are connected.

I have just figured out that the Olympic Games Opening ceremony in Tokyo will start 1 hour before the Connect-a-thon does.

I cannot tell you guys to ignore the Olympics, but please dont watch too much of it for the first 3 days?

We need those connections.

OK it is now less than 24 hours before the Connect-a-thon (And the Olympiics) begin!!

The time now is 11 AM Thursday EDT - and 3 AM Friday NZT.

The connect-a-thon begins at 0800 on Friday for me and 12 AM (midnight) Saturday for you in NZ!!

No more new team members can be accepted. We have 12 team Members - which is a nice Number!!!!

There are No Bibs this year. There will be ONE winner drawn at each hangout - you do NOT have to be in the chat to win.

The person whose name is drawn will win a wikitree T-shirt.

If you do win a shirt - you will be contacted about the details of your shirt (Size and mailing address) AFTER the connect-a-thon is over.

If your name is drawn it is then removed from the pot so that you are not drawn again.

It’s been fun watching the numbers tick up over the weekend - I surprised myself by finding a bunch of ‘laterals’ in my early settler NZ families that lets me add spouses & children with gay abandon.

I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which has been hitting me this (Southern Hemisphere) winter, so it feels like quite an achievement to have added a big clump of profiles over a couple of days.

Twice, I found husbands who were already on the tree, but their wives had been unknown, so I’ve got two PM’s to profile managers asking to connect up the couples (and their children).

I’ll be going back over some of the ‘new’ branches & adding more sources once I’ve had a breather.

Its coming up to 2 PM Friday in Canada and 6 AM Saturday in NZ. I have been up and online for almost 6 hours. I did not sleep well last night so I am going to go and have a short nap.

I should be back online in around 4 hours. (ie - 6 PM EDT and 10 AM NZT)

The team is currently at 60 profiles added - but others are catching up fast.

Ok I have just made my first family connection to the Big tree!!!   Should be updated overnight!!

The time now is 8 PM Friday in Canada - and 12 Noon saturday in NZ

Exactly 12 hours after this challenge begun!!!!

Now to go and find another family to connect!!

Had a few things to do this morning, so just getting started for the day!

I’ve added 42 profiles, mainly children of people I’ve already created. All were NZ profiles 1870-1920. I found three cross connections to existing profiles. I’ll do some more tomorrow. (I’ve now got to go back and add a personal category so I can find and do some real research about these people over the rest of the year.)

Don’t you just hate it when someone from another team creates profiles for a NZ family you’ve already tagged for profile creation! Grrr….DK!

Actually that has never happened to me.

My problem is that those profiles that I need to create, cant be created, because the ones already in place have incorrect details, and I dont have time to "Collaborate" with the PM to get the issues fixed.

There is a reason why I have so many unconnected profiles. Because if I could get them connected, I would have done it ages ago!!

A couple of questions -- on [[Space:The_Kiwi_Crew]] it says to click the challenge tracker , but on [[Help:Connect-a-Thon]] it says the tracking is automatic, can I get some clarification there?

Also the latter page is a bit unclear about the "scoring" - it seems to be saying that just 1 point is given per linked profile created, regardless of whether part of the world tree or not.

I have an unconnected group of 54 on my watchlist and was thinking that if I could connect that to the world tree then it's 54 points but it seems maybe that is not the case.

The tracker is automatic - you do NOT need to do anything.

My understanding is 1 point for each new profile you create during the connect-a-thon only

But  NO points for those profiles created prior to this challenge even if they were not connected.

I think thats how it works. I could be wrong...

Don't know what I'm doing wrong but I've worked on about 15 profiles, clicked the "Challenge" button, clicked the top category [for the dates 23rd to 25th July] then added a description of the change I made from the pull-down list that then shows up underneath …BUT when I look at the tally sheet for individual Kiwi Crew members, I don't appear at all!!  I'm on the list of volunteers for this challenge so can someone tell me how I've mucked up, please?? The tracker updates every 5 minutes so your new work will take as much as 5 minutes to be updated.

Also Norma, according to your contributions you are editing profiles.

The connect-a-thon is for creating and ADDING NEW profiles.  Thats why you havent shown up yet!!

You have NOT yet created any new profiles.

When you do add new profiles, you DO NOT need to click the tracker. Those new profiles will be counted automatically. BUT there is still a 5 minute delay before they show up on the tracker

OK, so I've just added a new profile …from within an existing profile to give them a mother… and now there's no "Challenge" tab after I clicked on "Save!"  How will this count towards our tally??

Well that last one DOES count - you are now on the Tracker Norma!!!!

You really should concentrate on finding and adding children that have not yet been added to their families.

I'm not sure what's going with the tracker today. The numbers have been up and down. We were up over 3000 a few hours ago, now we are back down to 1232.

The tracker was temp set to include all edits instead of just additions/connections but after it was discovered ( after a few hours of european night) the programmer set it right again :-)
