Help! I am having no luck in finding information on my great grandfather and great great grandfather. The info I have found is very basic. And then it's like they disappeared. My great grandfather is William Demont Frederick. He was born about 1856 in New York and died in 1912 in Alabama. My family states no one knew much about him. Then my great-great grandfather was George R Frederick. The only info I can find on him is that he was born Sept. 1852. I have tried all the different categories on ancestors.com as well as searching WikiTree. Can you help me? Thank You

You should make the effort to include all the children that are shown in these census records.  Parents often show up in their children´s homes later in their lives.  The 1910 census shows William and Mabel to have at least 6 children and the 1940 census shows Cecil and Wilma to have at least 5 children.  But these profiles show only a single child each generation.  It´s much easier and accurate to look for a family rather than an individual.

If George R Frederick was the father of William Demont Frederick, he couldn't have been born in 1852.  Who was William Frederick married to?  Any children?  Do you know where he was married?  Where the children were born?  The only William Frederick I found who died in Alabama in 1912 has a death record that states his parents were Gus (could be Geo and the transcriber couldn't read it as such) and Sarah.  I found a 1900 record for this William (I'm almost sure because it's in the same city, Mobile, Alabama, where William Frederick died) which stated his parents were both born in England.  Have you tried Family Search? To help you effectively, a little more information is needed.  Where did you find William before he "disappeared"?

I found the profiles you created for William, his wife, Mabel, and their son, Cecil.  I adopted Mabel and added sources to her (her parents names, her marriage date, her death), but I don't understand why you aren't the profile manager of those profiles you created?  I found William, Mabel, and their children in 1900 and 1910.  Mabel died in 1927 as a widow.  I found her in 1920 living with sons Roland and Cedrick (THERE'S an English name for you!)  Did you know that Mabel's parents are both buried in the same cemetery in the same plot in Mobile, Alabama as William Frederick?  There's a story there, I'm thinking.  All three have Find A Grave memorials with headstone photos.  I found all this information using Family Search for Mabel's death and marriage info, the death record gave me her parent's names so I could find her in census records.  As you are directly related to William Demont Frederick, and I have found his exact date and place of death, you should be able to send away for his death certificate, which may yield more clues to his life: maybe where he was born in New York so you can find him living with his parents in census records, maybe the maiden name of his mother, where for sure his parents were born, who gave the information for his death certificate, whether he was listed as married, single, widowed, or divorced at the time of his death, which could tell you if he and Mabel had split up before he died.

We tend to get stuck when we don't think outside the box.  Family Search also has census records available.  Some of them that aren't on their website give links to other websites where the images are viewable.  ALWAYS LOOK AT THE IMAGES!  I cannot stress this enough.  You'd be surprised at what you can learn just by looking at the actual image.  I haven't looked to see if there were any other Fredericks living in Toledo at the time of Mabel and William's marriage, but there might well be.  Why did he move from New York to Ohio?  Was it his line of work? Did he have family there? Perhaps a sibling moved to Ohio and he followed them there for better opportunities?  These are questions to ask when researching people and trying to make sense of their lives.

I will gladly un-adopt Mabel and let you take "ownership" of her and the other members of her family for whom you've created profiles.  Just let me know.  :)

Vicki,

I went backwards to Cecil Carr Fredericks and figured to start there with references and research.

Birth records show father: W. D. Fredericks, mother Mabel Carr

Found his draft registration for WW I

Father of the bride records: Spouse name: Wilma Lucille Williams, Child William Thomas Fredericks

Ohio Death Index records - might have died in Franklin Ohio, not Columbus, but not sure how close the two areas are or if Franklin is a suburb.

1940 Census records, showing wife, 4 sons, and a daughter

Find a Grave data - showing burial in Lima, Ohio - Woodlawn Cemetery

Soc Sec Death Index - resided once in Florida? I never rely on the residence data there, but it's interesting regardless.

1930 Census records, showing wife, 2 sons, daughter, a brother (Rolland) and a niece. Aha... Rolland will help to provide references to father...

And then it got weird... marriage records, showing father's name "Frederick E. Frederick" (mom Mabel Carr matches, wife Wilma Williams matches - has to be right) - Could father have two name references?

1900 Census records - appears he's referred to as Wm Frederick (William - appears correct) - age 44 in 1900 (born approx 1856) - birthplace - New York, Mom and Dad born New York. Married approx 1893. As of 1900 Census, had 3 sons and a daughter on that census.

I stored all the references in Cecil's profile - Fredericks-146. Hope it helps...

OK - dug a bit further. Born in New York - there are multiple William Frederick/Fredericks from 1855/56 New York, so it may require some digging to figure that out.

Moved to Ohio by 1893, as that's where he and Mabel were married (Lucas, Ohio). And their kids were born.

Birth place? Several choices - Several from NYC and surrounding communities, one from Utica. Not sure which is correct without doing additional research.
Added those sources to Frederick-850
Almost missed the g-g-g name was George R...

Closest match is in Utica - 1860. Wish I could paste with this browser... ugh.

Father: George Fredericks - born approx 1825 - New York

Mother Sarah J Fredericks - born approx 1832 - New York

Son William R Fredericks - born approx 1855 - New York

Son Mathias Fredericks - born approx 1858 - New York

That might be the wrong family, but worth investigating. Not sure it's correct though... there's a marriage record for a William Fredericks marrying Catherine Halk with parents George and Sarah.

There was one name undefined on the 1870 Census (NYC 1st District - Ward 11 - Page 28) where The undefined female - age 50 - last name Fredericks was living with a 16 year old boy named William Fredericks. The woman was from Ireland. This seems more likely to be your family, but there's not enough information there to guarantee a match. Would have been nice if they'd at least given her a name...
