I am new to trying to understand dna and matches. In my tree, I am a descendant of Edward IV and his mistress Elizabeth Wayte. Through their daughter, Elizabeth Plantagenet. I would like to find definitive proof of the match. Is that possible?

Is the person you mean see Margaret (Plantagenet) Lumley (aft.1461-aft.1498) | WikiTree FREE Family Tree Don't get put off by the Margaret name.

From research I've done online, there's confusion as to whether Elizabeth or Margaret married Lumley. But, yes, that's who I mean.

No it is not possible to link yourself with DNA to an ancestor who lived so long ago. The only way would be if you are a direct female ancestor and had Elizabeth Plantagenet's matrilineal DNA. Once you get to about your 4th great grandparent the level of DNA shared is very small.

However, a paper trail, for such a common and well connected royal, with probably a lot of descendants with DNA tests done, should be able to get an idea of their DNA profile. But still too far back. Your DNA can change so much in 4 generations. How many generations back is your connection. Double the number of ancestors ever generation back. It would be less than a percent of your DNA.

Yes, very true! If you are able to get good documentation of an ancestor's desdent from Elizabeth, then you can DNA match to a 4th great grandparent whose sources are good. Your most likely route is just sources detailing descent. I personally am still compiling sources to reaffirm my descent from Edward III’s son Lionel, Duke of Clarence.

Very good. I'm just going to hope that my connection is good, but should be through Edward III's son Thomas of Woodstock.
