I see the John Bates who was buried 25 Feb 1859 was of Walsall Street, and there is a John Bates with the occupation of Smith living at Walsall Street in 1841 and at the same address in 1851 there is John Bates with the occupation of Grocer - is this your John Bates?  If so, have you seen that this John Bates left a Will which was proved by the oath of Richard Caddick who was one of the Executors - the Will may provide some family information.

The only other information I found was a baptism at St Martin Birmingham for a John Bates the son of Joseph and Ann Bates who was recorded as "1 year old" when he was baptised on 8 April 1799.

Thank you for the information, this seems to fit as my information from a cousin who did family research in the 1970's had him down as born 1799. I will have to go to local records office & check.
