If you have Swiss roots or an interest in Swiss genealogy, culture, or history, please consider joining the Swiss project. There is no contribution requirement once you join — you may work as much or as little as you please. By joining, you will be invited to join the Google group, which hosts conversations between group members about Swiss genealogy and the Switzerland project. You will also receive a badge for your profile.

To learn more about the project, please visit the SWITZERLAND PROJECT PAGE.

Membership is open to all who have:

  • signed WikiTree’s Honor Code
  • been a WikiTree member for at least 3 months, and
  • have made at least 100 contributions to our shared tree

We also ask that you be willing to receive a brief annual check-in from the project and signal your interest in continued participation.

Joining is easy: post an ANSWER below (as opposed to a comment or reply - note that comments will be answered but then hidden).  Please state:

  • that you'd like to join the project,
  • what your Swiss-related interests are, and
  • what you want to contribute to the project or gain by becoming a member

If you aren't using your entire allotment of tags (you can follow up to 20), please consider also following the Switzerland tag so you will updated on G2G conversations about Swiss genealogy and the project.

I would like to join.  I have ancestors from Bern (Stussi) and Glarus (Baumgartner) that migrated to New Glarus, Wisconsin; Berne, Minnesota; and South Dakota.

Hello JM,

Welcome to the Switzerland Project! I have awarded you the project badge. The project is small, so has low activity. Most of that activity occurs through questions here on G2G, so I encourage you to add Switzerland to your list of followed tags. Otherwise, there is a Google Group for the project that can be used for internal communication, but it gets very little use. But if you would like to join that too, let me know.

I am very happy to see you have already been linking profiles to images of Bernese parish registers on FamilySearch. And I guess you probably know that Glarus has nothing online. My understanding is that some people have gotten the Cantonal Archives there to send images for a fee. Otherwise, it is very hard to do research on Glarus without being there in person, and very expensive to hire someone on the ground. (I have the same problem as my ancestors were from Valais.)

This site could perhaps be helpful:

Cheers! Yes, I am familiar with the link and a few others it mentioned!

I have been extremely fortunate that  other people uploaded the images and filled in the gene site going back to the 1500’s.  I cannot take credit for their years of painstaking work and am forever grateful for their efforts.  My small contribution was resolving a few minor discrepancies in their information.

New Glarus, WI is home to the Swiss Center of North America; however, I did not have enough time to explore it while I was there.

Hi

I'd like to join the Switzerland project as I'm Swiss and a quarter of my ancestors are Swiss, most of them from north-eastern Switzerland (Thurgau). My living swiss relatives are scattered across all of the German-speaking part of Switzerland.

I'd like to add all of my relatives and ancestors that I currently know of. Some lines go back to the 15th century.

I'm still relatively new to genealogy and still learning a lot.

Hi, I see a very familiar location in your tree, I'll message you smiley.

Hello Patrick,

Welcome to the Switzerland Project! I have awarded you the project badge. The project is small, so has low activity. Most of that activity occurs through questions here on G2G, so I encourage you to add Switzerland to your list of followed tags. Otherwise, there is a Google Group for the project that can be used for internal communication, but it gets very little use. If you would like to join that too, let me know.

Since you mention 15th century ancestors, please be aware that there is a simple process to get approved to add ancestors born before 1700, and a much more involved process to add ancestors born before 1500. A summary of the process is under "pre-1500 certification" here:
