Hannah (Tilden?) Stephens, lacks proof for connection to parents. Disconnect?

Considering that the descendants of Hannah and William Stephens are not currently an approved GSMD lineage based on the 2011 Mayflower 'silver book' on Richard Warren's lineage, I would suggest that a new Hannah Tilden be created as the daughter of Stephen and Hannah (Little) Tilden. The silver book states that this daughter Hannah Tilden was born on 14 October 1662 in Scituate, Plymouth Colony, but that there is no further record of her "unless she is the Hannah who died Scituate on 13 May 1710." The death record in 1710 is for a Hannah Tilden, not a Hannah Stephens. Is there other evidence that connects William Stephens' wife to the Tilden parents? There isn't a marriage record, nor did Stephen Tilden leave any probate records.

I propose that we then remove the unproven parents on the profile currently shown as Hannah, wife of William Stephens, and focus on what we do know about Hannah and what can be proven. At this time it appears that her maiden name is Unknown.

I encourage the descendants of Hannah & William Stephens to contribute to the discussion. If there is further primary evidence (please don't cite online trees or indexes) for Hannah's parents please provide the sources.

I know it's difficult when a link to a Mayflower line is severed, but we are looking to document our ancestors accurately, so please provide any quality source material available.

According to the Society of Massachusetts Genealogists, William Stephens married Hannah Tilden, the daughter of Thomas Tilden and Mary Holmes. She was born 1668 in Marshfield Massachusetts

The 2 Hannahs need to be merged. Hannah, daughter of Thomas is

Removing my comment as I seem to have misread. Back soon.

You may find these of interest. Although not primary sources, they do support the Stevens/Tilden assumption

My apology for not continuing with this. I have to tutor several youngsters via email on WW1 era literature,

Thanks very much for the leads, Eddie! Much appreciated!

I see that Thomas Tilden named a daughter Hannah in his will, but didn't mention a married surname or husband for her. I don't see anything else in the probate packet that helps identify her. So I'll keep at it, I'll check the other leads you supplied.

Well done with the tutoring! I've never had the patience :(
I have found, in researching the many connections of Donnie Blackstone, that frequently, as regards wills, the appointed executor/administrator and the witnesses are generally close connections of the deceased.

As to tutoring, it's my job. I actually get paid to torment teens LOL
The U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560 - 1900 name a William Stephens b 1646 Pl m Hannah Tilden 1692 Pl. Lists the spouses birth year as 1668. Not sure the origin of this record.

Mayflower Births and Deaths , Vol. 1 and 2 lists Hannahs DOB 14 Oct 1662. Scituate Births p 357 DOB shows same as MF.

Mark,

Indeed there is a birth in the Scituate records in 1662 for a Hannah Tilden, daughter of Stephen Tilden. The problem is that there is no marriage record, or any other record that I can find, that gives William Stephens' wife's maiden name.

Torrey's New England Marriages to 1700 calls her [Tilden?] and yet the sources are the above mentioned birth record of Hannah Tilden and then a Sherman genealogy that calls her Hannah ____.

I don't feel there's any good proof that William's wife was anything but Hannah Unknown.

Hannah is my 7G-grandmother via Bethiah Oldham, Bethiah Weston, and Bethiah Peterson, but that lineage also traces back to Anna Warren thru her daughter Patience, so I can offer no DNA evidence to support Anna's daughter Hannah.

Following up on research for this question.

There was Hannah Tilden who was born in 1662 in Scituate and probably died unmarried in Scituate in 1710. She was the daughter of Stephen of Scituate. Unfortunately Stephen did not leave a will when he died in 1711.

There was another Hannah Tilden, daughter of Thomas Tilden of Marshfield. Her birth year was not recorded, nor were her siblings, but her parents were married in 1664 in Marshfield. She was named in her father's will in 1704, but no surname was given for her.

One of these women named Hannah Tilden probably married William Stephens. He was born 1666 Marshfield. This couple resided in Marshfield, having 10 children there between 1692-1712.

A mother who was aged 45 at the time of a last child's birth in 1712 would have been born about 1667, which is a good match with the husband's 1666 birth. 1662 would probably be too early for childbearing in 1712, which is the birth year of Thomas Tilden's daughter. And it would be unusual for her to marry a man 4 years younger.

It seems, logically, that William Stephens' wife was more likely Hannah of Marshfield than Hannah of Scituate.

I plan to change William's wife shortly, unless other documents can be located to suggest this is unwise.
