Hello WikiTreers! In honor of US Black History Month, the US Black Heritage Project will be featuring a different group of profiles each week that we would like your help creating and/or improving and connecting.
This week we will be honoring those men and women who are recipients of the Spingarn Medal. This medal is award to one Black American each year by the NAACP for outstanding achievement. It was first awarded in 1915 to Ernest Just, scientist.
Our featured profile this week is Marguerite Ann Johnson (Maya Angelou). She was a poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist. She published seven autobiographies, several books of poetry, three books of essays, as well as writing, producing, directing, and acting in plays, television, and movies. She is best known for her series of autobiographies, most notably I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. She received many awards including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
I am 29 degrees from Maya Angelou. How many degrees are you connected?
How you can help us
- Help us create more profiles for Spingarn Medalists by finding names on our space page that don't yet have profiles.
- Choose a profile from the list and add sources, add biographies, add family members, add copyright free photos, help us get them connected.
- Add the new Spingarn Medal sticker to each profile. Please use the second choice for the code which adds the reason they received the medal.
Here are a few of Spingarn Medalists who need some love. Check out the space page for more.
If you create a new profile that is needed, the USBH project would like to manage/co-manage that profile. Please post here with the link to the profile or PM me to make that happen.
Thanks everyone for your contributions and for helping us honor these amazing Black Americans.
