I am trying to trace the Courtney family living in Armagh in the 18th century.

The two people at the end of the 'tree' from Armagh are James COURTNEY, living in Armagh in 1770, and Thomas NOBLE, also from Armagh in 1700.

Can't find out if they are Irish families, or English settlers.  Both were flax growers around Mullaghbrack

Any information would be most welcome

Hello anonymous,

Have you tried checking any of the links in the Irish Roots project for your research? They may help you find what you're looking for.

All the best

I have a Courtney ancestor, from Mulloughdary, Armagh, Ireland, born 1679, by the name of Thomas Courtney. He is a dead end on my tree.  He died in 1693, name of his spouse is not known, nor the names of his parents.

I am willing to bet that Thomas or one of his brothers fathered your James. Bet you a nickel! :)

I have no answers for you but do have a boatload (lol) of Courtneys to account for. My great great grandmother was Mourning S. Courtney married to Deona Williams (1845). TN She had a brother James b, 1806 in TN. Father George Washington Courtney b, 1780 in VA, I have no more than that but would be willing to share if I find more. MAYBE there is a match somewhere.

Have you thought about DNA testing?  I am looking for elusive Irish Courtenay/Courtneys as well and have been developing wikitree profiles for a number of them.   It would be good if you could add your ancestors profiles to wikitree if you havent already.  Hopefully we can connect them to someone else in the main tree.  Wikitree is developing great tools to help us find other people who we might compare our DNA results with, but it depends on everyone sharing their information and working together.  It sounds like there are two of you at least (i think there are two different anonymous postings) that could benefit both by sharing your tree as well as comparing DNA!
