Did you see the new "Copy ID" feature?

Hi WikiTreers,

You may notice this new icon on profiles:

Clicking it will copy the profile's WikiTree ID to your clipboard so you can paste it elsewhere.

You'll see the icon in the headlines of profiles pages and edit pages, on profile previews, and in your Watchlist.

Let us know if you have questions or spot problems. Also, if you find that it would be helpful to have the icon in additional places, post here and we may be able to add it in a future round of changes.

Thanks,

Chris

P.S. Thank you to those who have suggested this feature in the past. And an especially big hat tip to Steven Harris who included it in his WikiTree Toolkit browser extension. We hope Steve will agree that imitation is the highest form of flattery.

Sorry, Ian and Kenneth, that was how we had it originally but it involves some extra complication that is not feasible.
Chris, you couldn't move it up so that about half of the text is visible?
Chris, is it not possible to set the .copyWidget:focus:after top to -2em (from -.5em)?
Thank you, thank you.
Thank you so much for the Link.
Hi Kenneth,

It worked on the computer (not on a mobile) when you are in a profile and hoover over for example a father’s or mother’s name. You then saw Name. You could then copy and paste it in the biography. I don’t see it now anymore as it has been replaced by the Wiki copied link.

With kind regards, Carolina

Could we have

ID
image LINK
URL

This way, the other texts (ID, LINK, URL) would be partially visible when hovering-over the texts.

Just wanted to thank the Team for this addition. I didn't use it right away, but now use it all the time; makes adding links between profile narratives super easy. Thank you.
Chris

I am sorry to say that I do not know what a clipboard is.  I have been trying to copy but I am expecting the copy to appear on the page I am using.  Can you help?  And thanks for ansering my former question
Barbara, 'clipboard' is something the 'computer' has but we don't really see it.  If you 'click' on one of those 3 items that is shown in Ruben's image above, it will 'copy' something to the clipboard / notepad in the computer.  Then when you want to use it in your biography, you place the cursor at the place where you want to put it, then you 'paste' it (Use Ctrl key and 'V' key 'on a Windows computer') and the computer will add it to the biography in that location.

I love this tool! It's very handy. Thanks for this great tool, Chris. At first, I didn't see the ID but now I can.
by Greta Moody G2G6 Pilot (201k points)
Where are you seeing the ID?
I see the ID at the top of the WikiTree profile pull-down menu. That's the only place I see the ID.
It is always in the menu but not in Profile Preview box when we hover over a 'relative'.
You're right, Linda.

Unfortunately, it did not work at all for me.

When I tried using it while editing a profile, I got both the green "saving" box and the "are you sure you want to close this page, your edits might be lost" message. The screen was stuck and the only way to get out was to close the window or use the Back button, so all my edits were indeed lost. I'm using Google Chrome Version 86.0.4240.75
by Isabelle Martin G2G6 Pilot (580k points)
Ah, that's what I had yesterday.
I thought it had been fixed, but that might be because I turned on the previews, which I have had turned off.
It's working now. Have not changed any settings in the meantime.

Not working fo me either? Chrome Version 86.0.4240.75

by Ron Raymer G2G6 Mach 5 (54.5k points)

Hi, Ron ... I discovered that having Profile Previews turned off prevented it from working for me. So, try turning them back on to see if that makes a difference. I included instructions for doing that here.

Thanks Julie. That was the ticket.

Have a great day WikiTreeing!

Thank you for hearing the needs on the ID/name combo in the hover function.  The fix is working.  For those who haven't seen it yet, it's in the same place just below the name, but looks different.

First you see the ID, which we needed visible.  Then move your cursor a little to the right and you get

Copy Link  example: Ambroise  (Martin) Martin dit Barnabé (abt.1735-1796) and then move a little further right and you get

Copy Wiki Link which has both the ID&name AND the brackets example: Ambroise  (Martin) Martin dit Barnabé (abt.1735-1796)   It's a very complete name with birthdates, which could be edited out if you want it to be more simple.   This is even a little easier than before because I always had trouble picking up the left hand brackets without getting a bunch of extra info too.

And the last link is Copy URL example:  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Martin-19292

Thank you for the added capability!

Using Firefox 81.0 on Linux:

I seen (but have not used) the hover over link for Id/Link/Url on the relatives, on the manager, and in the bio. Why is this not also on the person's profile?

I've seen some strange behavior hovering on the link in the bio text, where sometimes there is no hover popup and other times there is. The difference seems to be if the manager has a name, or their given name is Living or Anonymous. Examples:

- from https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Callow-51 hover in acknowledgments has manager name who is managed by Closed Accounts WikiTree

- same pattern as Callow on https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/B%C3%A9langer-436 (id 6792005)

- from https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Callahan-676 hover in acknowledgements has manager name (Richard Spivey) with no popup and clicking on him takes you to Living Spivey managed by Closed Accounts WikiTree

- same pattern as Callahan on https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cake-46

New, clearer, and more forthright:  It is 5 days later and I find that 'copy ID to clipboard' does not replace what was lost and does not improve usability. What I need is the LINK next to the name, not the ID which I then turn into a link.  So I'm still doing typing that a LINK could provide (as in endlessly creating links from name-id(s)).  Also, just so you know, any mistakes in getting one person of the same name mixed-up with another is firmly on the shoulders of removing the ID from the URL in edit view.  I want it here, after this: www.wikitree.com/ and before your word, index.

Sometimes nice doesn't get it communicated:  Before, the id was in the address bar and now it is next to the name, but from each location I use it for the same purpose:  To create a link in a related profile.  The few times I need just the surname-number, for instance in proposing a merge, it would be easier for me to just delete what is not needed.

If the copy link is available, I've missed it.  Edited to add:  I refreshed a profile and the 'copy formatted link' was there for a micro-second. Edited again:  It was at the exact location where the circled-privacy pic is on the profile.

Thank you, B.

Yeah!  There it is:  Link.  Thank you so much.

Please restore the visible id # in the Adress Bar. Now the links to profiles are just messy, and you have no way to determine easily on which Person you are working just now.

Great new feature. I like to use links to relatives in my profiles and I’ve been known to lose a number more than once with the highlight and copy method. Once less opportunity to make a mistake!

I find it disconcerting that the URL no longer shows in the address line.  It's made working on Wikitree difficult (like when you must refresh), so I have stopped writing biographies until this is back.
by Kathy Rabenstein G2G6 Pilot (325k points)
What do you mean by "the URL no longer shows in the address line"?
Jaime, I think she means the wikitree ID is no longer in the URL

Like this :

https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:EditPerson&u=28173662

It used to have the WT ID# there.

I was wondering because Chrome is experimenting with hiding the full URL.
I don't use chrome, so that was from Edge.  I see the same thing in IE, and Opera.
The URL not having the WikiTree ID is not a bug, and should be the same in each browser.

I'm asking for the poster of the comment to clarify what she meant by the "URL no longer shows in the address line".

Thanks, this is a definite improvement. I almost never have to type an existing WikiTree ID in the Add spouse / parent / sibling / child field anymore, as I can just copy and paste it from elsewhere.

This is working really well for me now.  It's great!!!  Adding links into biographies is so much easier.  A big thank you to everyone who has worked on this.

Very nice tool, but could we get a modification on one please?

Using the copy link one, when I paste it elsewhere the result I get is this: Michel  Cressé (1641-abt.1687)

Might be ok when communicating in G2G, but in appearance it is ugly in that format in my view.  Could we get it to give this result instead Michel Cressé ?

When you are linking a number of people in a narrative, the current format it comes out in detracts from the appearance of the text, takes extra time to modify them all.

You can see what I am referring to on the profile I used as an example (Work in progress still)
by Danielle Liard G2G6 Pilot (684k points)
Danielle,

I agree with your comment. It would make it much easier when copying a link to include in another profile.

I absolutely love this new enhancement and use it a lot.
I agree with Danielle’s suggestion.

Love this tool!
I also agree with Danielle. I do sometimes want the dates, but most of the time I'm inserting the links in profiles and prefer it without the dates.
You can see in the example above something I've noticed: if there's no middle name (which is more often than not), then we get 2 spaces between the 1st and last names, which (being somewhat obsessive compulsive) I always have to edit.

Apart from which, this is just the best enhancement ever!

Thank you! I've been wondering how to use that. Very helpful.
