Basically this question has been answered before it was asked.   I am putting this question out there so that I can refer to this question going forward as we "correct" the spelling on numerous profiles.

From Jillaine Smith

PGM project was asked to weigh in on the LNAB:

Just checked Anderson. Not an easy solution.

First known record of immigrant Ralph is his 1633 church admission: Hinningway.

Next (1634): Hiningway.

1652: Hemmingway

1677: (his will signed with a mark) Hemenway.

1678: inventory Hemenway.

With all this confusion, but no explanation, Anderson went with Hemingway. PGM would, too.

We would use Hemenway as CLN since it was the spelling used at the end of his life.

I have a copy of the first edition of "Genealogy Record of the Descendants of Daniel Hemenway, of Shrewsbury, Mass." The author is Rev. Asa Hemenway who had the book published in 1881.

My grandmother is Sylvia Conant Hemenway. She is the daughter of Fred C. Hemenway who was the first owner of the Hemenway book. Fred served as a corporal in the Civil War. His father was Company Commander of Fred's unit. The father is Luke Hemenway.

There are variant spellings of the surname and I think that Hemingway is the most common.
Thanks Frank, the book is also available on line, and that book is what started the whole discussion!   How wonderful that you have a coopy of the book.
