Causes of Death: Paralysis

I'm researching a family for a one-place study I started doing a couple of months ago.  Two of the children died within a month of each other, aged 9 and 10 respectively.  The cause of death is listed as "Paralysis."  Has anyone come across that and is there any conjecture around what that might actually mean?

Polio causes death by paralysis, so it could be polio.

The ones I came across was mostly elderly or middle aged, It usually means a stroke for them. But children it was probably what Mary and Marion said.
