Fran's Connecting How to

England useful links index

Who you can connect to a single profile

This is what it states on the Thon page "we are just counting the number of parents, siblings, spouses and children you add to existing person profiles".

So no adding several generations unless you already have someone they can connect to already on the tree.

Ales will be auto tracking so no need to click anything just add and go on to the next one. During the thon last year there were 47 participates and we added 10,836 profiles so if your in to setting targets that is the figure to go for plus a bit more :thumbsup: :smiley:

You can also start your own thread below by Answering this question. Give us updates on your progress, ask for and give help and support your team colleagues

We'll be using the same Discord server as always. It so much fun to be able to have live conversations going on during the 'thons. If you're not already on there, just send Joan a Private Message, and she will add you.

Look forward to working with you all

Janet & Joan

Hi everyone the following is a sticker for the Connect a thon

{{Connect-a-Thon|team=Mighty Oaks|year=2020}}

If you are tracking what you do or afterwards

{{Connect-a-Thon|team=Mighty Oaks|year=2020| Added=insert Number here Profiles}}

 Hi guys I have been working with an England team member Elaine on a Smith (yes Smith) family, she has used this nifty citation link for BMD records that takes you directly to the BMD record page {Cite web|url=https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/information.pl?cite=rWYFe6z664%2FXepWtFpbrPA&scan=1%7Ctitle=Index entry|accessdate=8 July 2020|work=FreeBMD|publisher=ONS}

There is also this one for ancestry

{{Ancestry Record|7619|17152716|uk}}. Still need a membership for it to open the source but is very neat.

 Personally not seen these before so I thought I would share.

I has been a great 24 hours

https://wikitree.sdms.si/Challenges/ConnectAThon/TeamAndUser.htm

The tracker shows the team with 4,522 on the score board.  Maddy is leading the team with a cool 518 at 14.50 hours BST

Fab work everyone

The team had a great time and we added a whopping

12,615

Numerous connections were made to other branches and to the main tree. A huge thank you to one and all every new profile added counted.

I will be updating this page with anything that gets highlighted as being useful.

Putting the link https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:England_Useful_Links_Index here so it's more readily accessible during the Connect -A-Thon.

It is good, glad you like.

Joan and the England Leaders came up with it.
Ros Haywood should take all the credit.  She is the one that made it.

Just checking - it counts if you add a profile to the tree, even if the profile you are adding to is not connected?

And does it count if you add a person who is only added during the thon? e.g. I find a child Lisa for Homer and add her. I then find a husband Milhouse for Lisa and add him. Does that count for the Thon?
by Neil Perry G2G6 Mach 2 (27.3k points)

 Hi Neil, Thanks for the questions

  1. My understanding says the unconnected one would not count
  2. If Homer is already here and unconnected, than adding the child Lisa, will count as will her husband
I would check the thon help page see what it says regarding once the line is connect to main tree. If you are on Discord the whole team can answer these questions for you.  You will get a broader perspective on the what counts or not.
Night

Thanks Janet.

From the help page I found

Scoring

Each time you add a new profile to an existing one, you will earn a point. New profiles must have at least one valid source.

Note that for scoring purposes it doesn't matter if the person for whom you're adding a parent, sibling, spouse or child is connected or unconnected. Every missing family member we add increases the chances of connecting people.

Hi Neil

I am not sure the husband would count this point has been asked a few times now.

This is what it states on the Thon page "we are just counting the number of parents, siblings, spouses and children you add to existing person profiles".

So no adding several generations unless you already have someone they can connect to already on the tree.

If they have children you could add him before the thon and add the children to him then connect him to Lisa
Thanks Janet. I will make notes of these for post-thon additions!
My understanding is that there has been no change since last year. I have discuss this with several leaders who have the same understanding.

That being the case, any profile that you add to an existing profile counts.

If you add a profile that is completely new and has no connection to an existing profile, then it does not count.

During the Connect-a-Thon I'll be working on some of England's largest unconnected branches, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:England%27s_Largest_Unconnected_Branches

I've added some connecting hints to a few of them and would welcome any team members to join me and help clear some of them. Two of the connections are through Australian profiles from Queensland, and two are through profiles from the USA, (the states of Michigan and Utah), so if any team members have expertise in those regions then they would be especially welcomed. All the hints work from a connected profile towards an unconnected profile, as it's the way I like to work. And if you start on one of them and get stuck for sources, then just send me a message and I'll help if I can.

Thank Carol.  It would be good if we manage to connect some of the big unconnected branches.
