I never thought about it but now that you mention it I think the helmet is what makes the picture so powerful. He was awarded both the Silver and the Bronze both for saving lives under fire and under extreme conditions.

What a wonderful photo!  The family must be very proud!  It is one thing to get awarded a medal and another to have a photo of it being pinned.  What a treasure this photo is.
