I just wanted to post this to honor my cousin on Memorial Day weekend. Jimmie was a gunner on the USS Johnston. It was sunk in one of the largest battles in the Pacific during WWII. They had just survived a typhoon right before their ship was sunk, so lost all their lifeboats. When his ship went down he was in the water for 56 hours before being rescued.
His next ship he was on was the USS Niagara. When his +-year of service on the USS Niagara ended, he was back in San Francisco, and he and his wife went out to dinner together. After dinner he stepped out to hail a taxi. It didn't slow down and hit him. He died 8 days later. April 11, 1946.
