Tips and genealogical help for persons who have been adopted

Hi wikitree family. I hope everyone is staying safe and taking the proper precautions, with that said I have a question. About a week ago, a cousin of mine in New York whom I was blessed to connect with through DNA testing called me asking for help. You see, the wife of one of his DNA matches reached out to him asking him for his help. She said that her husband had been adopted when he was very young and had very little information to go one. He said that the wife of his DNA match said that his name kept popping up and that they are likely 3rd to 5th cousins. I do have some ideas and some suggestions that I will pass on to my cousin to assist his DNA match but I wanted to run this by others within the wikitree community before I responded to him. If anyone has any information or suggestions that may be beneficial to my cousin's DNA match, his search, or his quest to find out more about his genealogy. FYI, I have already checked some of my databases and this particular match is not a match that my cousin and I share so I don't think he and I related.

So your cousin has a DNA match who may be a third to fifth cousin, and that match was adopted?

Is your cousin experienced in analyzing his own DNA?  Can he give the match any tips as to which branch of his family the match should be looking at?  

What has the match done so far?  There are plenty of basic resources that can aid the match in his efforts.  It's hard to know what advice would be useful without knowing more about his experience level.
