Somethings I wanted to share.  When looking for the meaning of an abbreviation in the Hackensack marriage records in Documents Relating to the Colonial, Revolutionary and Post-Revolutionary History of the State of New Jersey – First Series -Vol. XXII – Marriage Records: 1665-1800;, I found that the date listed is is not the marriage date, but the date of the marriage bann.  Page 469 provides the following statement - "The dates given are of the proclamation of the banns, unless otherwise stated."  They usually provide a marriage date with m. or marr. and then the date.

I have seen many marriage based upon the dates provided in these records, and now I find they are incorrect.  I have done this also, unknowingly.  I have too many to go back and correct, but when I review my profiles, I will correct.  Goes to show, look at the information before the data, understand the entries.

Just some good information that people may not be aware of.  Y'all have a good day/nite and happy hunting.

Thanks for sharing your discovery Arthur. smiley

To add to our confusion, within a given collection some of the recorded dates are likely to be dates of banns, others will be dates of marriage, and some marriages will show both dates.

It helps to pay attention to the Dutch and English terms and abbreviations that indicate the meanings of these dates. The abbreviations used are not consistent -- and for some of the Dutch church records books it is necessary (as you found for Hackensack) to read the introductory notes to determine whether the entries are banns or actual marriages.

Some examples I recall at the moment:

  • Reg = date of banns
  • Ingeschreven = Dutch word for registration of banns; this will be the date of banns.
  • Ma = date of marriage
  • Getr or Getrouwt = date of marriage
  • With L = with marriage license. If they got a marriage license instead of registering banns, the only date will be the date of marriage.
  • With B = with Banns. If the record says this, the only date will be the date of marriage.
  • After three B.= after three banns. If the record says this, the only date will be the date of marriage.
