sorry to cast up an old thread, but I've just come across this while adding a profile and sources for James Leslie Mitchell (Lewis Grassic Gibbon) wife Rebecca Middleton I'm not sure James Leslie Mitchell profile is yet connected? the single connection appears to be via George Gibbon: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gibbon-244 , however there is no proof at all of George's parentage .. at least not that I can find? and it George's "parents" which are connecting JLM/LGG to the tree eta: in fact the trail appears (no proof at all except local knowledge) to lead to the fact that George may have been illegitimate with his mother possiby being a Gauld, his death record, witnessed by a son-in-law, has parents not known. The one "close" possible instance of him in 1841 census has a George Gibbon (aged 5) in a household with a Jean and a Margaret Gauld.. either of which **could** be his mother I suppose, but there are no relationship details on the 1841 Scottish censuses I'm looking at the other branches I have managed to find sources for but thought I'd give the heads up if anyone else is still working on LGG
Thank You Cathy, but it wasn't me.. I was challenging the single connection that had been made via an assumed father (Alexander Gibbon) I have now researched further and while there is still no actual proper sources (I'm seeing ScotlandsPeople images which can't be linked) I believe by a process of elimination that the linked Alexander is the most likely candidate. However even if it's still not the right person, I have now also managed to make another (sourced) connection so all is well in the world again James Leslie Mitchell (Lewis Grassic Gibbon) truly did come from very humble beginnings!
