James was born around 1793 in Maugerville, the son of James Taylor Sr. and Margaret Bartlett. He was farming in his youth but was also unruly according to a biography of his father (*) "..two of his sons James and Richard were farming independently. His sons became known in the countryside for their rough intimidating ways; each of them appeared before the magistrates one or more times on charges of assault." James Jr. married his first cousin, Mary Robinson Bartlett, the daughter of his Uncle Richard Bartlett III. They had at least four children, possibly five. They relocated to St. Stephen, Charlotte County, on the border with Maine where James was listed as a farmer in the 1851 census. James and Mary R. Taylor were in Saint John in 1851 as James signed a family document. It is currently unknown when James Taylor Jr. died or if it was in St. Stephen or Portland, Maine. His wife was a widow when she died in October 1865 in Portland.
