About the Project

The Scott Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Scott name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Scott name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Scott's), by time period (18th Century Scott's), or by topic (Scott DNA, Scott Occupations, Scott Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Also see the related surnames and surname variants.

Hi my name is Wendi Scott-Tomlinson. I would love to join the project. My maiden name is Scott and I have researched my lineage to Benjamin Scott of Massachusetts in the 1600's. Benjamin's wife, my ancestor, Margaret was accused and hung during the Salem Witch Trials. I'd love to be a part and help out anyway I can.

Hi Kirby,

It's fine to add the stickers to your profiles.

I've updated the page to the ONS Project standard. You may add your name under Membership or list any relevant free space pages under the Research Pages heading.

Hope this helps.

Request to join.

My Scott line starts with my 3rd Grt-grandma, Delilah (Scott) Lake (1835-1928), and extends five generations to William Scott Sr. (abt.1720-bef.1794) of Bedford county, Virginia. I coordinated a collaborative research project in 2018 that focused on William and his children, which gathered a fairly comprehensive collection of sources and family history. We found many other Scott lines in Virginia that we ruled as unrelated at that time, but these may deserve further analysis.

I have Scotts that were scattered all over the East Coast, and then to Alabama and Georgia. My Great Grandfather ended up in Florida. I am not able to get past the United States though. I am willing to work on adding sources or looking up information.

My case is unique. I hope this project can help me trace my Scott Lineage. I was born in Liberia, West Africa - for context please briefly read History of Liberia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberia. I have also wanted to trace my paternal lineage. I just learned that my Great Grandfather was Jeremiah R.D. Scott, from Clay Ashland, Liberia. I was born in Cape Palmas, Maryland, Liberia. The Scott family is a hugh family in Liberia. It is believed that the common ancestor emigrated to Liberia from the United States. I would like to trace that lineage. Please help.

William Scott Sr. (1770-1885) and his sons Daniel (b.1815 in Schoharie County, NY-1885) and William Jr. (1820-1884) all came to Keeler, Van Buren, Michigan, in 1837 and bought farmland and practiced general agriculture. Daniel Scott married Tamar Brown (1812-1871) in 1835 in NY. All lived and died in Keeler and are buried in Keeler Cemetery. All have grave markers. We believe that the Scotts and Browns are originally from Ridgefield, Fairfield, CT because of the Keeler Tavern there and the naming of the Michigan town Keeler after the Keeler family there. Seeking where they came from in NY and any genealogy of the Scott and/or Brown family in Ridgefield, CT.

I'm trying to trace New Zealand relatives. My grandfather William Scott left Hawick (Scotland) for Dunedin around 1899-1900. He had a son called Andrew who died in the First World War.

Hi! I'm tracing my maternity line 'Scott' from Louisiana and Texas back to Georgia and Florida, then from the Carolina's where the trail runs cold in the late 1700's. I'd like to join the project.
Hello, I am new to WikiTree and I'm researching the Scotts out of Carter County Kentucky. Unfortunately I'm not having much luck. I'm waiting on a DNA test to hopefully find some cousins and share data with them. Would love to join the Scott project. Thanks!

My great-grandmother on my Mom's side was Edith Frances (Scott) Smart. She married Percy Whitmore Scott, in Birmingham, England. I am also related to Scotts in Bermuda. I am trying to solve the mystery of who my female Scott ancestor was who had 3 children with Sam Scott, a former slave in Bermuda, circa 1850.
