About the Project

The Moore Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Moore name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Moore name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual team studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Moores), by time period (18th Century Moores), or by topic (Moore DNA, Moore Occupations, Moore Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Please add me to the project. I am a Moore with earliest known proven ancestor Thomas Moore 1739-1833, married to Rosannah Fowler. I believe Thomas was the son of Thomas Moore of the Scottish Moores who emigrated from Northern Ireland to Nutfield, NH in 1718. My line quickly removed to PA and eventually migrated south to Laurens, SC and then Knox County, KY.

Have you considered the Moree family? Darlington/Spartanburg, South Carolina area. I am descended from those Moree’s along with the Moree family I am descended from the Douglass, the Poston, the McCarter/MacCarter and Moree families. You will often see these families married into one another. I also receive hits from the Moore families.

Interested in Moore project. My maternal grandmother was born a Moore, and her father’s family was in South Carolina for generations. They’re a tough side of my family to track down.

I'm interested in any connection in the Moore family with my Ross family. The Moore surname keeps coming up in my DNA results. Out of 10 results, 6 are Moore's. I've contacted them and no one can help me connect to my grandfather who we know nothing about except that he was born in Georgia, married in Morgan County, TN in August, 1900, and likely died in Careyville, TN in 2009. We've been searching for well over 20 years and have found nothing!!! So, I'm trying to figure out the Moore connection to see if that approach will lead anywhere. Thanks!!! :)

Cindy Worley Beam - I really want to join. I am at a brick wall with my Moore line. My 2nd great-grandfather was George Washington Moore, born July 1850 in Tennessee to William Moore and Margaret ?. He lived the majority of his life in Beaverdam Township, Haywood County, North Carolina, dying around 1889. He married Texanna Scott, daughter of Humphrey Posey Scott and Rachel Woods in Haywood County, NC. They had 8 children. We don't know Margaret's last name or anything else about William and Margaret.

Hello. I have reached a brick wall in tracing my Moore ancestors. We've been Forida residents since early 1800s. Earliest known Moore is believed to have been born in GA arriving in the colonies 1767 at Charlestown SC. Any similarities?

I wish to join this group. I had my Y-DNA done and found out that I descend from Collins Moore from Sussex, Massachusetts! I am not truly a Bailor. I am getting close to solving this mystery! I have it down to a NPE about 4 or5 generations back.

Please add me to this group. My maiden name is Moore and my family comes from Mississippi. My latest confirmed ancestor is John Jackson Moore (1802-1876). While I don't have the Y-chromosome, I would love to participate in a DNA study to ensure that my ancestry is correct.

REQUEST to Join the Moore surname project.

I am looking for any information on my 2nd GGrandfather John Henry Moore. We have found records with Henry as his first name and Thomas as a first name on a census but we have hit a brick wall. He was born in 1855 and died in Oct 1881 in Cameron, Milam Co., Texas after falling off of a horse at 26 years of age. My GGGrandmother, Mary Rmantha Lewis Moore re-married a year later and with two small children made another life. Any information would be appreciated. We think his Father was Guildford Mack Moore b.1813, d.1870 and Mariah Thompson b.1838, d.1895. Mariah's sister, Mary married John Franklin Guthrie and we have a DNA connection there as well. though the DNA gives a weak connection. Chelle Nelson
