Notes

Note N567.

“Zadok Nutter was a member of an organization known as the Flying Camp, under Colonel Samuel Patterson of Delaware. Also with Capt. John Woodgate’s Company of Flying Camp, September 7, 1774, (September 31). Zadok Nutter was born in Sumerset (sic) County, Maryland, in 1759. Also, his brother Christopher Nutter born 1761. Father, Thomas Nutter, having moved from Maryland to Augusta County, Virginia, moved to Sussex County, Delaware -returned to Virginia in what is 1772 was Harrison County and built the great Nutter’s Fort. Zadok Nutter went back to Sussex County Delaware to enlist with friends in 1776. His brother, Christopher, a little later enlisted with the Virginia troops. (See Christopher Nutter’s application for pension). 1

Family tradition says Zadok Nutter served all through the Revolutionary War, and later with Maryland men in border warfare, but the War Department and State Records of Delaware give only Flying Camp Record, and Woodgate’s Company, 1776. Tradition says he was an officier of junior rank. 1

For genealogy see Bortetourt County Records, also Frederick, Maryland, Annapolis, Maryland, will books, etc. See McWhorter’s border settlers of N.W. Virginia, page 158-260. Christopher, Zadok’s brother, born in Sussex County, Delware, January 21, 1760. “Sulers Allied Families of Delaware” tells of a Christopher Nutter of Sussex County as early as 1717 and the same occurs later in the family. Christopher, Zadok’s brother, tells of having lived in Sussex County, Delaware”. [13]
