Elihu Norton was born in Edgartown, Massachusetts, in 1760, the son of Seth Norton and Amy Norton. He moved with his family to Addison, Maine, when he was about 7 years old, in 1767.

He married Sarah Beal. They lived at Jonesport, Maine, where Elihu was a moose-hunter.

He served in the Revolutionary War. He applied for a pension on 4 June 1833, which was rejected as a was unable to prove that he served for at least 6 months. ^[1]
