John was born about 1763 in North Carolina. His parents were Col. John McGee and his second wife Martha McFarland. At a young age he was a Pvt. in NC Revolutionary War.
He was reared in the Presbyterian faith but converted to the Methodist faith and called to the ministry about 1788.
John married Martha Johnson about 1791 and they raised a large family. They were living in the Middle Tennessee area when John took part in the "Great Revival".
He died at Dixon Springs in Smith County, Tennessee in 1836. His original burial site was near the present TVA Nuclear Power Plant site. In 1976, he was removed and buried at the Hartsville Methodist Church site in Trousdale County, Tennessee.
