John Gray, the son of Andrew Gray of Harwich, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, and Phebe Chandler Gray of Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts, was born 27 November 1732 in Cumberland, Maine.[1][2]

In the American Revolution, John Gray commanded a company in Col. Jonathan Mitchell's regiment of Massachusetts militia in the Penobscot Expedition, 1779. [3]

John married Sarah Mitchell on 02 November 1755 in North Yarmouth, Cumberland County, Maine.[4]

Sarah and John had 13 children:

  1. Phebe Gray was born on 11 December 1755;
  2. Andrew Gray was born on 18 July 1758;
  3. Jonathan Gray was born before 23 March 1760;
  4. Jane Gray was born on 23 November 1761;
  5. Keziah Gray was born on 29 March 1763;
  6. Sarah Gray was born before 22 September 1765;
  7. Lot Gray was born in 1767;
  8. Rachael Gray was born on 20 September 1767;
  9. Rhoda Gray was born on 07 October 1769;
  10. John Gray was born on 19 January 1771;
  11. Jacob Gray was born on 31 December 1774;
  12. David Gray was born on 12 March 1777; and
  13. Olive Gray was born on 25 May 1779.
All the children were born in North Yarmouth, Cumberland, Maine.

The 1790 census of Cumberland lists John Gray at Number 4 Plantation.[5]

Capt John Gray died 27 January 1797 in Maine; however, his church record has 28 December 1796, age 65.[6]
