Biography

Birth: Joshua Grant was born in about 1801 in Maine, USA. He was the son of John Grant and Elizabeth Clark. ^{[1] [2]}

Marriage: Joshua Grant married Elmira Grant 26 Aug 1824 in Shapleigh, Maine. The marriage was solemnized by Rev. Charles Blanchard. Marriage intentions were published 23 Aug in Shapleigh where they were borth residing. ^{[3] [4]}

Children: The following have been assumed for Joshua and Elmira:^[5]

• John C Grant, born about 22 Dec 1827. Died 19 Oct 1894.^[6]
• Frances Grant, born about 1830, died 24 Jan 1842.^[7]
• Moses W. Grant, born about 1836
• Joshua P Grant, born about 1839
• Almira F Grant, died ^[8]
• "Elmira" Almira H Grant , born about 1846

1850 US Census, Acton, Maine: ^[5] Joshua, age 50, is living with his wife Elmira, age 44, and several children: John; Moses; Joshua P and Elmira. Joshua own real estate and is farming.

1860 - 1870 US Census, Acton, Maine: ^{[9] [1]} Based on others enumerated on the same census pages; the couple appear to be living is the same neighborhood and perhaps the same home. In 1860, Joshua's age is listed as 56 years and Elmira's as 52 years; there only two children remaining at home: Joshua P who is listed as 20-year-old farmerand has attended school in the last year. "Almira," age 14, has been attending school. About 1868 son Joshua P marries Lydia E Whitehouse, and by 1870 Lydia, age 22, has joined the household. Hilda Grant, age 22, is also living in the home, relationship unclear. Son Joshua no longer lists an occupation. None of the women are working outside their home. ^[10]

1880 US Census, Acton, Maine: Two sources for Ancestry sources for an 1880 Census where attached to the with gedom inport. Both attachment appear to point to the same census page, but the page does not appear to represent anyone connected to the family as found on the 1850 - 1870 Census. (The two Ancestry connections are saved in Research Notes.) This census page appears represent Joshua and Elmira's family. ^[2]

Joshua, age 70; wife Elmira, age 73; son John C, age 32(?); John's wife (another) Elmira Grant, age 49; and two grandsons: Frank W Grant, age 21; and Rosco E Grant, age 11. (Son John's reported would make his date od birth 1848 which is signifigantly different from 1827 and represented on the 1850 Census and his marriage record. Perhaps a transcription error?) ^[11]

Death: Record has been found for a Joshua Grant who died on 6 Dec 1882 at the age of 82 in Sanford, Maine, which matches what AGC populated from the gedcom data. ^[12]

• Birth Record is required. No connection as been found to John Grant and Elizabeth Clark. Dates of birth has been take from census records and include:

• Place of Death requires furhter research. Lebanon, Maine, was report by AGC from gedcom import as a second place of death option. ^[13]

• These 1880 Census sources were attached at the time of gedcom import. Moved here as unable to find a connection to Joshua and Elmira Grant. Perhaps a clue for someone with more experience. In 1880 Joshua (age about 80) was living in Acton, York, Maine, USA. ^{[14] [15]}

• These census where attached at time of gedcom and labeled by AGC labeled "Birth." Both appear to be a possible option for this couples' son Moses Grant. ^{[16] [17]}
