Mary's birthdate is supplied on her death record as October 15th, 1836, however, her birth year appears as 1840 in the census returns of 1880, 1900, and 1920. A calculated birth year of 1842 is noted in the 1870 census and a calculated birth year of 1848 in the 1910 census. [4]
Immigration to the United States
Mary Flanagan left Ireland and immigrated to the United States in the late 1850s or early 1860s.
She may have been in her early 20s.
It is unknown if Mary travelled alone, or with family.
Mary's brother George William Flanagan immigrated to New Zealand, where he settled in the Nelson province.
Marriage and Family
Mary Flanagan married, at about age 29, to 20-year-old John Murray.
They were married in Davidson County, Tennessee, Untied States, on the 7th of May 1865. [5][6][7]
By 1878, after 13 years of marriage, Mary, about age 42, and John, about age 33, had completed their family.
Mary and her husband John lived much of their lives in Nashville, Tennessee, were they resided for many years on 1401 Pearl street.
In 1870, on June 1st, during the United States Federal Census, Mary and her husband, were residing in ward 5, in the Davidson County of Tennessee, at Nashville.
At the time, Mary may have been about age 33 and John may have been age 25. In the Census, Mary's age is recorded as 28, and John, who is presumably recorded in error as William, is shown as age 30.

In 1880, on July 1st, Mary and John were residing in District 22, Davidson County where John was a farmer.
Mary, aged about 44 at the time, supplied her age as 40. John, aged about 35 at the time was recorded as age 41.
The census records their six children as: Pat Murray, age 14; Thom Murray, age 13; William Murray, age 11; Mike Murray, Ed Murray, age 4, and 3-year-old Katie Murray. [9]
By 1890, Mary Murray and her husband John Murray were residing on Pearl street in Nashville, Tennessee. [10]
In 1900, on June 1st, Mary Murray, age 63 and John Murray, 55, were living in Nashville, Tennessee, where John Murray was an Engineer on stationary machinery. Mary's supplied age was 60, and John, 55 years.
They were residing on Pearl street where two of their adult sons were living with them, William Murray, age 27, and 24-year-old Michael Murray, both working as Book Keepers. [12]
In 1910, on April 15th, Mary about age 74, and John, about 65 and were living on Pearl Street in Nashville, Tennessee. Also in the household was their son Michael J Murray, age 35, working as a mail clerk at the Post Office. [13]
In 1920, on January 1st, Mary Murray, about age 84, a widow, was living on Pearl street, off 14th Avenue North in Nashville, with her son Michael Joseph Murray, a clerk at the Custom House. Mary’s age was recorded as 80 in the census.

Death and Burial
Mary Murray nee Flanagan passed away in 1920, aged 84.
She died in Nashville, Davidson, Tennessee on the 29th of October 1920. [15][16][17][18][19]
Funeral service for Mrs. Mary F. Murray, who died Friday night at her home 1401 Pearl street will be conducted at St Joseph’s Church this afternoon at 2.30 o’clock.
Mrs Murray was a native of Galway, but had made Nashville her home for the last 60 years. She was the widow of John Murray, who engaged in the ice business in Nashville for many years.
She is survived by four sons, Patrick, William, Michael and Edward and one daughter, Mrs Owen Hines.
The following will serve as pallbearers; James P. Breen, T.A Ryan, Jr., John P Murray, Owen Hines, John Hines, Chris Murray, Nenon Murray, Edward Murray.
Both Mary and John were buried at Calvary Cemetery in Nashville. [21]
