Privateer & Military Service

In December 1776, private Daniel Drinkwater was in the Massachusetts militia raised to reinforce the Continental Army. [1]

In November 1777, he was Chief Mate on the privateer USS Pallas. A privateer is a private person or ship that engages in maritime warfare under a commission of war. The commission, also known as a letter of marque, empowers the person to carry on all forms of hostility permissible at sea by the usages of war, including attacking foreign vessels during wartime and taking them as prizes. Privateers outnumbered Continental Navy ships: 1,697 to 64 navy ships. [2]

The USS Pallas is on the list of ships on the Continental Navy. She was a brigantine borrowed from France in 1779, returned in 1783. She is listed as a frigate with 32 guns. Her name appears in the record of John Paul Jones' ship Bonhomme Richard battle with HMS Serapis.

At dawn on September 23rd, Bonhomme Richard, along with Pallas, sighted HMS Serapis and her consort sloop Countess of Scarborough. It took the entire day for the ships to close on each other due to the poor winds but by 6:30 in the evening Jones bespoke Captain Richard Pearson of Serapis. No kind words were exchanged and within the hour a firefight was in progress.
