Joseph Coffin Boyd was an American soldier and politician. He served as the first State Treasurer of Maine.

Birth

http://familysearch.org/v1/LifeSketch Joseph Coffin Boyd was born as the son of James Boyd and Susannah Coffin. He had nine siblings. [1] His father was the son of Robert Boyd, the fourth son of the 1st Earl of Kilmarnock. [4]

Career

Boyd was a member of the turn of the century the Portland Federal Volunteers, a unit of the militia , the President John Adams supported. The unit was supported by the population of Portland.

He spent two years as a business man in France, then returned to Portland. There he became clerk of the civil court, notary, and a deputy of the Portland Customs House. In British-American War of 1812 Boyd paymaster for the District of Maine from 1813 to 1815. He was even replaced the sum of $ 1,374.35, the Captain Westcott had been handed out for his soldiers. The money had been lost through an "inevitable accident". Since Boyd knew how urgent it was needed, he reimbursed the sum of his own funds. Without money the money could not be refunded.

Boyd was the first state Treasurer of Maine. [5] [6] His term began in 1820 when Maine joined the Union, and he died in 1823 in office of typhus in Portland.

Personal Life

Joseph C. Boyd married Isabella Southgate (1779-1821) on December 12, 1795, in Portland, Cumberland County, Maine. [3] They had fourteen children. [1] [4]

Joseph Coffin Boyd died May 12, 1821. His grave is at the Eastern Cemetery. _Sec A, Tomb 61, Portland, Cumberland County, Maine, United States [2]
