Biography

No record has been found of the birth of Elma Atwood. Her death record says that she was born at Alstead, New Hampshire, the daughter of William Atwood and Permelia (Carey) (Richardson) Atwood, and her age at her death computes to a birth date of 26 Nov 1857.^[1] She was the twin sister of Emmons Atwood.

Elma Atwood was living with her parents at Alstead in the Moses Richardson househpold in 1860 at the age of 2,^[2] and was recorded incorrectly as a male child, Elmer Atwood, living with her parents at Alstead in 1870 at the age of 12. ^[3] In 1880, Elma L. Atwood, 22, was boarding with the family of Edward S. Baldwin at Marlborough, New Hampshire, and was working as a dressmaker.^[4]

Elma L. Atwood never married and was the mother of no known children. Elma L. Atwood, dressmaker, died from acute uraemia at Keene, New Hampshire, on 6 Nob 1897, with her age at her death rdcorded as 35 years, 11 months, 11 days.^[1] Her grave marker in the Atwood family plot at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Keene is inscribed with the dates 1857-1893.^[5]
