Biography

Kristine was born in 1874. She was the daughter of Jacob Andreasen and Laura Lauritsen. She passed away in 1960.

In 1903, Kristine and her 3 children made a trip to Denmark. September 9, 1903, they left Copenhagen together with Hans Peder Kinnerup. They arrived in New York September 21, 1903. Their final destination was Corning Landing, Minnesota.

From Arne Nielsen, Digterparken 52, DK- 2750 Ballerup, Denmark in October/November 1998:

"When my grandfather, Christian Martinus Kinnerup died in 1982 at the age of 95, he left some letters which he had received from relatives in USA, but also a letter from Kristine Tonding.

The letter is postmarked Austin, Minn. Dec. 9, 1953 230 p.m. The return address is:

Kristine Tonding
1413 -W- Freeborn
Austin, Minn.

Inside the envelope is a Christmas card, on which Kristine wrote:

"From Kristine Tonding

Vil skriv et Brev snart" (will write a letter soon).

She still remembered the Danish language. Also there is a photo of herself. I[1] did not then know who Kristine Tonding was.

(Note - through correspondence with Kathrine Hines the photo was identified as an 80th birthday photo. Kathrine's mother had a copy.)

From the Danish Emigrant Archives I knew that my grandfather's brother Hans Peder Kinnerup emigrated from Denmark to USA in 1903. In 1904, his brother Ludvig followed him, and in 1911, my grandfather Martinus joined them. In 1914, my grandmother Eleanora Marie emigrated to Minnesota, she and Martinus married, and they had two daughters, Edna, born in 1915 and my mother Martha, born in 1918. In 1920, my grandparents and their daughters returned to Denmark where they have stayed since then.

After some time in USA, Hans Peder called himself Harry, and Ludvig changed his name to Louis. Louis married an American girl from Decorah, Iowa. They had a daughter, Lois, who now lives in Rochester, MN. My wife Bodil and I saw her and her husband on our travel through the USA one year ago.

Harry died in 1948, but I do not know much about him, except that according to the 1920 census in Duluth, MN, he was married to a Swedish girl, Marie, who was a hairdresser. However, no one in the family has ever heard about her.

Harry emigrated September 9, 1903, and he was the first of the Kinnerups to emigrate. I have often wondered how he managed coming to a foreign country. So, I ordered a passenger list for an arrival in New York in September 1903 from the National Archives Trust Fund, Atlanta, Georgia.

I received it in April 1997, and it said that Harry arrived in New York September 21, 1903 on the steamship Hellig Olav. it also said that he was going to join "A friend, Neils A. Tonding, Corning Landing, Minn."

Accidentally, on that same page of the passenger list, I saw the following names:

Tonding, Christine, 27 years old, wife, last residence USA, destination Corning Landing, Minn., going to join her husband N. Tonding, Corning Landing, Minn. (The spelling of Kristine is not quite correct.)

She was accompanied by her 3 children, all of them were born in the USA:

Lauritz, 4 years old
Hemming, 3 years old
Emilie, less than 1 year old.

This means that Kristine and her children had made a trip to Denmark, and now they were on their way home to their husband/father Niels Tonding in Corning Landing. And they had Harry with them too.

I have later found that Kristine's maiden name was Kristine Elizabeth Andreasen, and that she was from a location called Gilsager close to Ringsted in Zealand. The Kinnerups came from a place close to this.

She was born October 3, 1874 in Gilsager close to Ringsted and her parents were small-holder Jakob Andreasen and his wife Laura Johanne Lauritzen.

Kristine emigrated November 17, 1896. She had emigration contract No. 1797 and she travelled by the steamship Thingvalla. Her destination was New York.

Kristine and her husband married sometime in or after 1896 in USA, and they had at least the 3 above mentioned children. Her husband's name was Niels Andersen Tonding (in Danish: Tønding). He was a dairyman when he emigrated from Tolstrup close to Ringsted in Zealand on may 12, 1896. His destination was New York and he travelled by the steamship Hekla. He had emigration contract No. 728. he was 26 years old which means he was born about in 1870. The name Tonding is Tønding in Danish spelling, and Tønding is a location in the southwest of Jutland, but apparently he was not born there.
