Rank: Captain

Killed at the first Battle of Saratoga during the American Revolution for Independence [1] He was popular with his fellow soldiers, who elected him their Captain, and first-hand accounts relate that he was shot through the heart while charging the British.

Jacob Allen was commissioned a Captain in Bailey's 2nd Massachusetts Regiment on January 1st 1777. He was killed fighting soldiers commanded by British General John Burgoyne. He was a sergeant during the Lexington Alarm in April 19, 1775 . ("Hero of Fort Schuyler: Selected Revolutionary War Correspondence of " By Peter Gansevoort, Jr.) [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8]

Jacob Allen was born on April 4, 1739 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay. His parents were Jacob and Abigail (Kingman) Allen. [9]

He married Abigail Bailey on December 7, 1762. [9] [10]

Together they had 7 children born in Bridgewater: [9]

  1. Jacob Allen, b. Sept. 3, 1763.
  2. Timothy Allen, b. Nov. 4, 1764.
  3. Bailey Allen, b. Nov. 8, 1766.
  4. Bettie Allen, b. Oct. 26, 1768.
  5. Jemima Allen, b. Oct. 15, 1770.

  7. Ward Allen, b. Sept. 11, 1775.

He died on September 19, 1777 in Freemans Farm, Saratoga, New York, United States.

Not much is known about Jacob. His daughter wrote in her application for a pension (through her husband's service in the revolution) that she does not remember her father very well. She only recalls the day when her brother and his friend (her future husband) returned home at the end of the war.

If there was an oral history passed on about Jacob it had been lost by the time of his great, great, great, great, grand daughter as she never said a word about him, and likely was lost even before his great, great, grand son, since he shared many stories with his grand daughter and she related these faithfully to the following generations. He is only known to the current generation through documents (1980s).
