Biography

DOROTHY ABBOTT, b. at Concord, NH, 28 Dec 1746[1] daughter of Nathaniel Abbot and Penelope Ballard;[2] d. at Concord, 27 Sep 1776; m. 29 May 1766, DAVID GEORGE,[3] b. at Haverhill, MA, 27 Oct 1745 son of David and Ann (Cottle) George; David d. at Littleton, NH, about 1816 (probate). After Dorothy’s death, David George married Hannah Colby about 1777 and they had eight children.

Dorothy Abbott married David George of Haverhill. There were several Haverhill families who migrated to Concord near the time of its first settlement. David George was a tailor in Concord. He placed an advertisement in the newspaper giving the price for making a “genteel suit of superfine broadcloth” as three dollars and the price for an “ordinary suite of coarse cloth” as two dollars.[4] David held several civil positions in the town.

In his will written 8 July 1811 (probate 5 November 1816), David George made bequests to the following persons: oldest son David George, George Thatcher the only son of daughter Hannah Thatcher, daughter Jane Virgin has already received her portion, daughter Dolly Morse, and daughter Betsey Martin. These first five bequests are to the children from his marriage to Dorothy Abbott. His children from his second marriage named in the will are Nanne George, daughter Ruth Gridley, daughter Polly Gennes, son Jacob Rise George, son Christopher Columbus George, son Hector Temple George, daughter Laura C. George, and son George Washington Adams George.[5]
