Hi WikiTreers!

The WikiTree Browser Extension is now available for Safari on the Mac, iPhone, or iPad.

You can download it by searching for "WikiTree Browser Extension" in your device's App Store, or by clicking on this link: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/wikitree-browser-extension/id6447643999

You can see what features are available in WBE here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:WikiTree_Browser_Extension

A big thanks to Ian, Jonathan, Murray, all the people who helped test, and the rest of the WikiTree Apps Project!

Edit: Updated to 1.8.3!

Thanks Jamie and everyone involved in development and documentation! I'm gradually turning on options and finding a lot of very useful features.

But I've struck a problem with My Menu. I initially added three links to it, and they appear and work. Now I want to add more links, I can't work out how. The relevant section of the options menu looks like this:

WBE My Menu option: screenshot

If I click either on the green button or where it says My Menu, in both cases it just turns the button off or on. I'd be grateful if anyone can please advise how to get to the place where links can be added or edited.

I just upgraded to version 1.8.3 (stable) but the behaviour is the same.

I'm using the Windows version, but in my case it's not in the options menu that I need to click to add more links. Instead I click where it says "My Menu" at the top of a page, next to "My WikiTree". That opens up a page with a box saying "Add any link" and "Link text" (as shown in the screenshot at the link you posted to the help page).

Great, thanks Paul! If I click once there, it opens the menu, but if I then click a second time, it opens a popup allowing editing of the links. That's what I needed.

A further point: the added links do not seem to appear in the Back Up Options file (which by the way is called "Unknown").

Jim, I'm guessing that you are on a Mac. We know about the poor file download control we have on Macs. There's a section about it in the doc. There is also this:

The download process will, most likely, present you with a dialog offering you the option of where you want to save it, and potentially even afford the opportunity to assign a filename of your choice, or (depending on your browser) the file may simply download to your system-default downloads folder, in which case you may want to find it, rename it, and save it somewhere memorable.

  • Click the 'My Menu' heading to start selecting links to include in 'My Menu'.
  • Click a link to add it to the menu (in the top right of the window that opens up).
  • Click a link in the top-right menu to remove it.
  • Re-order the links by dragging them up or down the list.
  • Save the menu by clicking the 'x' in the top-right of the window.

See: 3.4.4 My Menu

Thanks Murray. I'm using an iPad. I can live with the "Unknown" file name. Shouldn't the My Menu links be saved though? It might be a lot of work to recreate them.

I think the documentation for My Menu, which I had read, should say

  • Click the 'My Menu' heading twice to start selecting links to include in 'My Menu'.

Clicking it once just opens the menu.

Ah! You iPad users caught me again, neglecting different modalities of gesturing. Yes, My Menu open when I hover over it, which is atypical menu behavior to start, so no wonder it behaves differently for you, because you can't express 'hover'.

I'll add something to cover this. Thanks for pointing that out to me.

Couldn't have done it without you, Jamie.

Thanks for getting the Safari WBE over that last hurdle.

Brilliant - thank you Jamie so much for this.  I have been waiting for this and will be glad to go back to doing my research in Safari not Google.  Thanks and high-5 to Ian, Jonathan & Murray - you guys rock!

I’d like to use the keyboard shortcuts but can’t figure out the access key for my iPad.  I use an attached keyboard.

Also, the bottom of the right-hand column tends to disappear before I can copy the parent’s names and IDs.

Thanks!

Hi Laura. Re your second point, you may be able to improve the behaviour by un-setting an option. Have a look at the first illustration in the section

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:WikiTree_Browser_Extension#Change_Summary_Options

Go to that point in the WBE options popup. If necessary, click "Show Options". Then turn off the option "Show the options and save button in the right-hand column".

Thanks!  Appreciate the quick response.

WBE is in general working well for me and very useful thanks! However, the Back Up Data command is not working, with Safari on iPadOS 16.6. When clicked the button turns green like this:

Screenshot of WBE Settings & Data Backup popup

But it just stays like that till I close the popup. Nothing else happens, even if I wait say 20 seconds.

I am using My Menu, but not (as far as I'm aware) the other features mentioned.

Back Up Options does work.

Sadly, if I want to log in on wikitree on my Safari browser, it crashes. I'm on a rather old macbook.

So I'm working on Firefox, with wikitree browser extension, and till not long ago, also the CC7 Change feature worked.

.. but now the entry in the find dropdown menu has disappeared.  If I go to 'my wikitree' -> connections, I can click on the number, then always need to re-login on wikitree-apps, but it doesn't get me the CC7 change list back.

So, my counts keep increasing, but I cannot see where this happened.
