I’m currently working on adding and improving the profiles of many direct and collateral ancestors who served on both sides during the war, mainly from Georgia, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, and North Carolina. Two of my direct ancestors fought on opposite sides at the Siege of Vicksburg.

I'd like to join. I have several men in my family tree who fought (and at least one died) in the Civil War.

One gr-gr-gr grandfather enlisted with a California Regiment. I've got his muster rolls and had had his pension file from the National Archives. This guy has been a colorful character to research. He got around. LOL

by K Malady G2G6 Mach 2 (21.4k points)

Hi Kelly, Welcome to the US Civil War: War Between the States Project  We don't have a special flag for the 48th Regiment, but do have this Ohio State Flag (current) = Civil_War_Flags-58.png   I added to Malady-71's profile a simple Civil War Sticker and added the correct category for his unit.  Also, you should look over the project page, especially the hints concerning categories and stickers.  If you add US CIVIL WAR to your following tags you'll be able to see what is happening in the project.  Glad to have you.

Thank you so much and I'm glad to help any way I can

Let's rock.

My GG grandfather was Edward P. McManus.

Captured by the Confederates twice, escaped both times; damn good thing the 2nd time- the poor bastard was on his way to Andersonville!!
by Stephen Helmlinger G2G1 (1.3k points)

Hi Stephen, welcome to the US Civil War: War Between the States Project  Please look over the project page, especially the hints for categories and stickers.  During March, the project has had a challenge concerning the POW's that died in the Andersonville Prison, and it really is a good thing your gg grandfather escaped.   Andersonville Prison was a really horrid place.  Stephen glad to have you in the Project.

Would like to know more about what is involved in this project.
by Elinor Hutchinson G2G1 (1.8k points)

Hi Elinor, the first recommendation I give is to work on your Civil War ancestors, then if you'd like to get more involved we have some tasks listed on the US Civil War: War Between the States Project page.  If you enjoy challenges, we have monthly challenges, right now we're making profiles for the POW's who died in Andersonville Prison.  We also have members who create space pages for units they are interested in.   Hope this helps smiley

I am John W Hollis from Springfield, Illinois.  My grandfather John W Hollis has a tombstone below Lincon's tomb.  He was enrolled in the union army on 9/20/1861 for three years.  He was a member of Company B of the 10th Regiment of the Illinois Calvary volunteers.  He was declared dead during the battle of Little Rock (please note, had that been true I would not be here today). Shot twice he reported for duty a day or 2 later.  I am personally aware of customs of the times at Oak Ridge. Also I have John's record from the Army and from his pension actions.  These data may be of interest.

Hi Pam, thanks for the project sticker. I will start on my own ancestors and think I understand the stickers for them. My gggf was General Herman Haupt, in charge of the railroads 1862-63. Would he be a sticker or a project box?

http://www.mrlincolnswhitehouse.org/residents-visitors/the-generals-and-admirals/generals-admirals-herman-haupt-1817-1905/
He would be a sticker.  Project Boxes are only for profiles managed by the Project.   But if he has a Wikipedia article about him he would also be notable

I’d like to join. I have two 3x-gr-grandfathers who fought. They were both my paternal grandfather’s maternal gr-grandfathers. One fought for the Union; one fought for the Confederacy. I’ve always thought this must’ve made for some interesting family gatherings for my gr-grandmother and her parents! cheeky

I'm interested in joining. My 4th great grandfather (James C M Hankal) was an enrolling officer for the CSA in Tennessee had to seek a presidential pardon after the war. His three sons joined the 29th Tennessee Infantry Regiment as minors. My third great grandfather (James M B Hankal) was wounded in the battle of Atlanta in 1864 and his arm was permanently crippled. He was a member of the UCV and attended their reunion in Chattanooga in 1913. I have all of this documented.
