Birthplace and parents of Charles Axel Fagberg

My great great grandfather Charles Axel Fagberg born about 1834 was said to have emigrated from the South of Sweden to Australia. There is nowhere one can find birth records or parents  for this person in Sweden. My guess is that he changed his name when arriving in Australia. He was married to Eliza McKenzie in 1861 and their daughter, Jane Caroline, was born in Australia and was my fathers paternal grandmother.

Would appreciate help to find Charles origin. /Best regards B R

Hi BL. Welcome to G2G! In case you don't know already, Jane had several siblings. Here are some formatted references. Perhaps some were given names from grandparents, for example Johanna or Rebecca.

This Find a Grave memorial states he was born in 1834 in Helsingborg, Helsingborgs kommun, Skåne län, Sweden. There's no source, but it's a clue.

This is interesting:

Richard Ulrich Claesson appointed Charles Axel Fatberg as the executor of his will. Richard left his estate to a sister in Lund, Sweden, and asked that a brother in Helsingborg be notified. That tends to support the idea that Charles may have come from Helsingborg. The images start here in case the image link in the reference above is hard to follow.

Charles's probate documents and will are also accessible through this PROV search for Chas Fagberg. Unfortunately there is no image for the will. There are images for probate documents, but I don't think they help.

Great finds, Jim.

Richard Claesson was born in Övedskloster 1829 Dec 03 (parish Öved) to Otto Claesson and his wife Gustafva Stille.

The family (also with sister Elise) is living in Öfveds Closter 1830-1837.

Thank you so much for this piece of information!
Thanks BL. I'm glad this was useful and that Maria was able to track Richard down. Johanna as a possible name for Charles's mother could explain why it was the middle name for one of his daughters.

In order to find him, more research really needs to be done in Australia for him.

Is there not any clue in the wedding register who his parents could have been?

When did he arrive in Australia? Can you find him in any ship list? Is he in any kind of census? Application for citizenship?

As for the names, Charles would in Sweden been Carl/Karl, Alexander could have been Axel. Fagberg would been unusual, could perhaps been Falberg or misspelling of Hagberg.

Or maybe Fagerberg.

and if you want to count days, you might be able to work out his exact birthday from the notice his wife placed in the paper on the anniversary of his death: "Family Notices" The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848 - 1957) 6 October 1893: 1. Web. 14 Jan 2022 <http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article8698483>.

"FAGBERG.—In remembrance of Charles A., the

beloved husband of Eliza Fagberg. He died on the
6th of October, 1891, at Park street, North Carl-
ton, aged 57 years 1 month and 6 days.
Always regretted by his bereaved widow and
family and friends. (Inserted by Eliza Fagberg,

It is interesting, because I had started looking at a person called Carl Axel Eberhard Fagerberg (also sometimes called Wahlberg), and he was born 1834 Sep 1st. Which is the date I calculate from your notice above.

He was born in Landskrona (https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/C0066931_00271), and in 1860 he lived in Raus, just outside of Helsingborg. After that he is missing from Swedish records.
Important information! I have been searching church records from Skane before, not finding the birth of this baby but having a possible date of birth now I can narrow it down.  From another family tree (Ancestry) I've found a possible mother called Johanna Wahlberg (with a question mark) - so it fits if he is referred to as Wahlberg. Maybe born out of wedlock at first. Thank you so much
That is the same person I was looking at. His mother was Johanna Wahlberg (sometimes Walberg or Wallberg) and she was unmarried and had several children. She later married widower Peter Fagerberg. Johanna was born around 1800 in Helsingborg. I found her also on geni.
