Gordon Legge began the First World War as Chief of the General Staff - Australia's top soldier. Wanting to serve in action, he was appointed General Officer Commanding the 2nd Australian Division at Gallipoli and on the Western Front; one of the senior ANZACs. He resumed his appointment as Chief of the General Staff in 1917. Gordon's eldest son was killed in action in France in 1918 whilst second son, Stanley (
