                  US Black Heritage Project's

Connecting Challenge

In order to meet the US Black Heritage's goal of creating 50,000+ new African-American profiles in the year 2021, we have started a connecting challenge. It will be similar to the WikiTree Connect-A-Thon with a few exceptions. Please read our challenge space page for all the rules.

Who can participate? Any WikiTree member who has upgraded from guest and has signed the honor code.

Start/End: This Challenge is a month long. We begin on the first of each month and end at midnight EST on the last day of each month.

A participant sticker will be available to all members who join in for at least one of the months. Special stickers will be awarded to all participants who create at least 25 profiles in a month. A Winner's sticker will be given to the top contributor each month.

To Partipate:

  • Read the rules please!
  • Click on the "answer" button below my name on this post to declare you want to participate.
  • Start with an existing profile and create a family member attached to that profile. Keep adding as many family members up, down, and sideways on the tree as you can. Each new profile is one point.
  • Make sure the research is correct! Use primary documents to find and prove relationships.
  • Add the {{African-American Sticker}} to any profiles of Black Americans who lived in the USA, so the project can keep track of the profiles and honor their heritage.
  • Add at least one good source to every profile.
  • Use the Challenge Tracker to keep track of every new profile you create for this challenge. It will count the total for you automatically. If you discover you forgot to track some, you can list them here to count.
  • Repeat.
  • If you are working on enslaved ancestors, every new slave profile you link to a slave owner using the USBH Project's guidelines, counts as a connected profile. See the Heritage Exchange Portal for more information.

Have questions? Please ask.

Only have time for a few profiles? Please join us! Every contribution gets us closer to our goal.

Do you need some profiles to get you started?

If you are already on the WikiTree Discord server, you should have access to the US Black Heritage Connecting Challenge channel. If you can't access it, please send me a message.

Thanks for growing our tree!

Our October total: 3346

Total new profiles for 2021: 29572

October Winners: Patty LaPlante, Carolyn Martin, Denise Jarrett, Kate Schmidt, Katie Bryant

it's never too late, Laura. We work all year round and this month's challenge will go until the end of the month. Then we'll start over for December. Thanks for the help!smiley

Perfect, thank you! A few months ago I was literally lamenting to all my friends that I had all of these records of enslaved peoples that I’ve found in my tree and didn’t know what to do with the information, wanting to help their descendants connect with them. I started keeping an excel spreadsheet of all slave records I could find, my ancestors mostly but also neighbors and others I could find. I’m so happy to find out a project like this exists.
That's wonderful, Laura! In case you haven't seen it, we have a portal that tells you how to document enslaved ancestors and slave owners at WikiTree. That's here:

Oops. I forgot to sign up myself. I'll be adding as many profiles as I can--hopefully lots of profiles for our new Family Builders program.
by Emma MacBeath G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)
Anybody who wants to jump in with Family Builders should take a look at the spreadsheet. There are several people waiting for someone to build their trees. It's a lot of fun!
Do you have a link or other directions for seeing that spreadsheet? I'm not new to Wikitree, but I am new to really using the G2G forum, etc. (or Discord - whoa - a new platform!)

Hi Jennifer, the spreadsheet is for members of the USBH Project who are Family Builders. (I agree there a lot of new platforms to get used to!)

But the Connecting Challenge is open to everyone and you don't need a spreadsheet for that. You can either start on family you have in mind to work on or choose from one of these categories to build family from.

I dont know if you may be able to help. I have a 4th great grandmother who may have been of African ancestry and possibly connected to the Melungeon Collins family in Tennessee.

I have talked to some people who think the records that list her as Black may belong to someone else im not sure.

I can't be 100% that she has contributed to my African DNA or if it is all coming from my Moorish 12th great-grandmother.

Some of my 4th great grandmothers information can be found here. https://www.familysearch.org/tree/pedigree/landscape/G35J-MBK

Are you trying to figure out her parents? What's the research question?
I'm trying to verify her African Ancestry. Both her parents are listed white but she or another Rhoda Collins in her family home was listed Black. However Census before in Missouri she is listed white in the house hold of her husband.

I would like to join this project.

Yesterday I added someone my grandmother had admired, James Evans Jones, Jones-111580, and some of his family.  He is a notable person.

I have an ancestor who owned slaves and know the name of one.  Am looking for more.

The Progressive-Index, Petersburg, VA, 12 May 2012, has an extensive list of men born slaves who became lawmakers.

Interested in all of these.
