Hello! I can't believe I have only just heard about Wikitree, as I have been "doing" family history since the pre-web days. It does seem to try to solve the problems of collaboration which is so difficult with the commercial sites.
My interest started many years ago and was helped along by the gift of my gt grandfather's Bible which has many family records in it - all of British India. That in itself is a fascinating chunk of history, especially learning about mixed ethnicity issues and political turmoil.
Recently I set my self a project to find out what happened to my great grandaunt, Margaret Woods. She was one of 3 children, along with their mother, who survived the Siege of Lucknow (India) in 1857. Their father was killed in the siege. I knew nothing of her except a mention in a letter by her brother (my gt grandfather) that she "now lives in Croydon".
Margaret married twice, in India, bore 13 children, and emigrated again, this time to Kimberley in South Africa, at the close of the Boer war!
My researches have led to the discovery of a murder in Kimberley, an elopement to Sydney, and living cousins in South and central Africa.
Back in the present day, I am trying to get to grips with adding people from my Gedcom (successfully uploaded) to Wikitree. I'm not finding an obvious way to do this easily!
