Biography

Janette Anderson Smith was born on the Isle of Arran, Scotland in 1957. ^[1]She was the 2nd daughter (and 2nd of 4 siblings) of Robert Anderson Smith and Mary (Lammie) Smith. Janette was raised at Ashlar Farm, Machrie, Isle of Arran, Scotland.

At age 16 Janette attended Rothesay Academy, Isle of Bute, to continue her schooling which was not available on Arran at the time. Furthering her education she achieved a Diploma in Primary Education at Jordanhill College of Education, Glasgow in 1977, a Diploma in the Education of Deaf Children at Moray House College of Education in Edinburgh in 1983 and a Master of Arts in Education (with Distinction) at Oxford Brookes University in 2002. Her teaching career in Scotland from 1977 to 1994 encompassed primary school and deaf school teaching in Glasgow and a lectureship in education of deaf adults at Motherwell College of Further Education.

In 1994 she joined the British Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) and was posted to a teacher training role in Sri Lanka. This led to a 10-year service to deaf children, schools, community and an advisory role within an international charity organisation and the Sri Lankan government special education department. A further 10 years saw Janette being involved in charity and educational projects in the country until 2014. After 3 years working in educational centres in Saudi Arabia and Qatar she returned to the Isle of Arran and subsequently Verona, Italy, to enjoy early retirement.

In 2009 she met her partner Robert Christopher Horne (D.Phil) from Consett, County Durham, England, while both were working in Sri Lanka. Since 2023, they reside in retirement in Kilwinning, North Ayrshire.
