Betsy spends way too much time on WikiTree.

I grew up just north of New York City, went to college in Rhode Island, and have been a transplant to the Midwest since the early 90’s.  When I’m not doing genealogy, I’m a flutist and teacher. I felt a tug towards family history when I was a child because of the family belief that the Tudor name in our tree somehow tied us to Henry the VIII. However, it wasn't until 2015 when I got seriously into genealogy research. During the summer of 2023, I took Boston University's Genealogical Principles course and plan to pursue my credentials as a Certified Genealogist.

My maternal family names are: McMurray, Menzie, Ratnour, King, Schaff/Shaft, Redwood, Tudor, Chandler and Ealy. To put these into geographical context, my main areas of research are in South Gloucestershire, UK; Niagara Falls, Canada; and Madison County, NY.

My father's family is from Taipei, Taiwan (surname 柯). My Chinese name is 柯妙娜.  妙娜 was given to me by my paternal grandfather and it was his favorite girl's name.

I spend my time on WikiTree with the England, Scotland, Wales and Canada projects. In addition to research, I also lead the Events Committee and serve as a Mentor. I lead monthly New Member Q & A sessions via Zoom and also enjoy being one of the hosts for the Saturday Roundup livecast on WikiTree's YouTube channel.

I've been honored to be featured as a Member of the Week in May 2023 and August 2022.

Hello Ian,

I'm very sorry to have missed your first email. My in box has been quite unruly the last few weeks.

Yes, I very much wish to remain in the England Project, especially since so much of my personal ancestry is English. I just embarked upon OT2 with Malc Rowland this week.

Is there anything else I need to do right now?

Thanks, Betsy

Hi Betsy!

I wrote to you recently as part of the England Project's annual check-in with our project members. I haven't heard back from you. I hope you are well.

If you could please drop me a quick note to confirm whether you are still interested in the project and wish to remain an active member, that would be very helpful.

If we don't hear from you within the next 2 weeks, we will assume you are no longer active in the England Project and remove you from our list of project members. You would be most welcome to re-apply to join the project at a later time by signing-up on the project’s G2G welcome post.

Many thanks!

Genealogical relation (Goodson) emigrated to (Marshall), Deansboro, Oneida County, New York from England c. 1830. Disregard if not interested. Thank You for your time. Tom Capstraw (Wikitree).

Hi Betsy,

We are cousins, though distant. It appears that we are both related to Alice (Kebble) Perkins (Kebble-2), which is through my paternal grandmother's line. I am working on several of my ancestors, of which are ones that came from England, Scotland, Germany, Netherlands, and Ireland. My WikiTree is Hill-26126, and I have a tree on Ancestry named Hill-Jackson Family Tree. Glad to run across another cousin.

Hello Anita and nice to meet you!

I was interested to read both your and our common ancestor Alice's profiles. I've only been aware of my Perkins connection for about 2 years and haven't delved too deeply yet. So much interesting history there!

Good luck with your research and let's stay in touch.

Hi Betsy, we are indeed cousins through my Cummings line. My ancestors came to America in the 1600 except my paternal grandmother who came in 1880s from Scotland. My maternal grandfather’s Renwick family came to Nova Scotia from Scotland in 1860s and then to Boston. All the rest came in 1600s.

I haven’t gone into depth on my Cummings side but my maternal great grandmother from Albany, Maine was a Cummings/Wilbur. On Wikitree my number is Blodgett-850. My tree on Ancestry is Blodgett Family Tree. Good to meet you Cuz!

Good to meet you as well, Judith and sorry that it's taken me so long to reply. So we come through siblings John and Ann Cummings. I see that Ann ended up in Enfield, CT which is the place from which I knew my 4th great-grandfather (Ann's 2nd great-grandson) came from. I grew up on the east coast and lived in New England for about 6 years. I'm just now realizing that I have deeper roots there than I had thought. Always exciting to see a straight green connection like ours!! Cheers, Betsy

We are 15th cousins twice removed through Anne (Hastings) Ferrers (abt. 1423 - abt. 1472) She is Hastings-1046 I am Nash-9215, Interestingly I have been able to go back as far as 20AD on some relatives. (again nothing is certain, but considering all factors, I am amazed at that and so many European and eastern royals boggles the mind) Cheers from Edmonton Alberta Canada.

Greetings, Dennis! I just had a look at our MCRA's profile and it was an interesting read. I haven't reached that far back yet with my personal research. I agree with you that it really gives the mind something to chew on once you get back in the shadows of history like that. Nice to meet you, cousin!

Hi Betsy. My dad used to work with a guy named Moses Ko. I'm guessing he's pretty distant from you, but then, we're only 20 degrees from each other.

Nice to meet you, Scott. Relationship finder says that we're 10th cousins. I don't know of any Moses in my family, but maybe he's a very distant relative. Most important would be the question of whether his surname is the same character as mine.

Hi Betsy,

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important that you read and understand the Pre-1700 Profiles help page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines laid out on that page.

Thanks for showing Scotland as one of your interests. If you haven’t yet done so, you are welcome to join the Scotland project via the G-2-G topic. The Project runs the Tartan Trail which encourages those new(er) to Scottish research to get to grips with Scottish sources. There is a wee bit of a wait as each person “hiking the trail” is allocated a mentor to assist and encourage them.

I hope you get a great deal of pleasure collaborating with colleagues in this great project. If you have any questions or wish any advice either send me a private message or email me.

Hello Betsy

Thank you for adding your DNA to WikiTree. The Getting the Best from DNA page will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.

I hope this helps! If you have any questions or problems, let me know.

Hello Wendy,

Thanks for your message! I have been working my way through the beginner how-to guides. Yesterday I tried to upload a gedcom file of my Ancestry tree. I tried twice and then it told me that there was an error uploading my file. What should I try now? If it matters, it said my file was "GEDCOM 178589: Ko Tudor Redwood Family Tree.ged".

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you can make.

Betsy

posted by Betsy Ko
Hi Betsy

One possible reason might be the file size. There is a limit of 5,000 people per GEDCOM, but I would recommend starting with a much smaller file to begin with. The link I sent you above gives some information about splitting your file.

I will ask a colleague if they can check what the issue is, but it may take time to get an answer.

Wendy

Hi Wendy,

That makes sense. But I'm nowhere near that number of people. I have just under 550 people in my tree.

I don't mind being patient for an answer. (Weekend is my big genealogy time.)

Thank you!

Betsy

Hi Betsy

The file size is really large in spite of being for a limited number of people. My colleague says she has seen that before with files created by Ancestry. She suggests you import it to a different software package, then create a new GEDCOM from there. She says RootsMagic has a free version that she has had good luck with.

Another thing you might try is to exclude photos, or attached documents, if that is possible. You can’t import photos via GEDCOM.

Let me know how you get on.

Wendy

Hi Wendy,

Thanks for this. I have FTM, so I'll play with that this coming weekend. If not, I had already been thinking of trying the free version of RootsMagic. Fingers crossed that I can get it to work.

I appreciate your help!
