James Henry Harris was born in 1861 in Cornwall to Henry and Susan (Kent) Harris.[1] Both of his parents were from England.[1]
In 1881, two significant events occurred. James both immigrated to the United States from England that year, and he also married Emma.[1] It is not clear in what order these events occurred. By 1900 the couple was residing in Pennsylvania, although reported that they had also been in West Virginia, and they were not naturalized citizens.[1]
In 1900, the family was residing in Lower St. Clair Township, Pennsylvania, where James was working as a locomotive engineer and his son James E. was working as a brakeman for the railroad.[1]
