James Haskins was born 9 Nov 1849 in the township of New Albion located in Cattaruagas County, New York. He was the first child of Horace R Haskins and Rueanna Arrants who married there 31 Jan 1849. James eventually had two brothers and one or two sisters. Horace was a blacksmith and settled in Napoli about six miles south of New Albion village in 1847. Rueanna was the first child of James Arrants and Elizabeth Drew who had been in the area since the 1820s. Business must have been slow because Horace packed up the family and moved to Saginaw village in Saginaw County, Michigan by 1858. He became a blacksmith and machinist for a local machinery company that serviced the growing saw mill and lumber milling industry. James met and married Irene Jane Wines of Blissfield Township, Lenawee County Michigan and they married in East Saginaw village 3 Mar 1869. James and Irene moved back to Blissfield and James worked as a "moulder" who made window and door frames with their internal components. Irene's parents moved in with them (or the other way around). Their first child Henry was born in Apr 1870. In the mid 1870s James is working for the railroad and by 1880 he is a teamster. Daughter Jennie Irene is born on 15 May 1872 and son Horace S. on 20 Dec 1874. Between 1874 and 1880 James and Irene have moved to neighboring Tecumseh Township. Their daughter Etta May is born there on 18 Dec 1880. Things were apparently not working out too well as Irene (Jane) filed for divorce in 1886 in Lenawee County. Irene married Thomas Kelly on 4 Aug 1887 in nearby Petersburg, Monroe County but they kept their abode in Tecumseh Township. Irene had two children with Thomas: Anna and William in 1888 and 1889 respectively. It is interesting to note that the petition for divorce between Irene and James was dismissed in 1917 for lack of pursuit by the parties. Between 1886 and 1895 James moved north to Homer in Midland County where he marries Sarah Nancy Bliss Barnes 7 Nov 1895 in nearby Edgewood village of Gratiot County. She dies before 1902 and James marries Sarah Nancy Beck in Hamilton, Gratiot County and settle in Lafayette Township of Gratiot County. James passes on 5 Sep 1929 in Lafayette Township and is buried in the Lafayette Township cemetery. Sarah probably remarries as she becomes "lost" after his death.
