James was born 1796[1] to William Wight and Elizabeth / Betsy Richardson. He passed away in 1825.
He was presumed, from accumulating DNA matches, to be the James Wight who married Lydia Aitken, and with the now found death record (thank you Harry) providing a firm age for him, this ID seems certain.
Entry reads: William Wight carrier in Maxton, and his wife Elisabeth Richardson had a child born 23rd Aug and baptized Sep 11th 1796 called James [3]

entry shows James Weight as 29, resid. Tyne Castle Toll, cod inflamn, this address being that given by Lidia when they married in 1820 [4]

entry in the Register of Proclamations reads: James Wight Smith ?Sun hall? & Liddia Aitken, daughter of the late James Aitken, residing ?Tynecastle? Toll, that they are unmarried persons and not within the forbidden degrees of consanguinity, and have resided in this Parish for the space of six weeks previous to the above date (30 Jun 1820) is certified by William Moffat Elder as per certificate [5]
It is looking increasingly possible that James, smith, marrying Lydia Aitken really might be the James born to William Wight and Elizabeth Richardson in 1796 at Maxton
This is currently based on a set of DNA matches between three descendants (2nd cousins to each other) of Walter Wight and Helen Sinton, a descendant of Walter's sister Isabella, and two descendants (uncle/nephew) of James and Lydia's son James. Unfortunately none yet triangulated, so just an accumulation of shared matches presumed to be accounted for by this connection.
DNA yet to be more fully explored (not all tested descendants are on the same sites for comparison, please consider using the free uploads to any / all of MyHeritage, FamilyTreeDNA, GEDmatch and GeneaNet for cross company comparisons)
It would be good to confirm this working assumption with a yDNA test - I have one with your name on it if you are a direct male line descendant, pretty pleasee :) Henderson-2297 20:52, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
